Pinarayi Vijayan, the former Chief Minister of Kerala and prominent opposition leader, voiced strong opposition to the decision, alleging that it represents an effort to enforce an RSS-driven agenda. Speaking in Kannur, Vijayan demanded the immediate withdrawal of the order, calling for a return to traditional protocols.
Arguments Built on Historical Precedent
Highlighting historical norms, Vijayan asserted that the nation has never accepted compulsory singing of the complete textual composition of Vande Mataram at public functions. Traditionally, only the initial two stanzas of the anthem are sung alongside the national anthem during official events. He emphasized that altering this long-standing practice without consensus is unjustified and unnecessary.
"The country has never accepted the full singing of Vande Mataram under RSS policy, and this decision must be revoked immediately."
Vijayan reiterated that reciting the first two verses has always been regarded as sufficient for all public and state celebrations.
Criticism Directed at Congress and State Leadership
The former Chief Minister launched a direct attack on Chief Minister VD Satheesan, the UDF leadership, and the broader Congress party. He questioned their stance, arguing that adopting the full version of Vande Mataram runs counter to the secular principles historically advocated by Congress. Vijayan accused the state government of succumbing to external political pressures.
He further alleged that the state administration's willingness to align with the RSS agenda has been evident ever since the government took its oath of office. According to him, modifying established protocols undermines the political and administrative neutrality of the state.

Debates surrounding the song are not entirely new; previously, Maulana Madani had raised concerns regarding Vande Mataram legislation, emphasizing religious freedom perspectives and stating that Muslims worship only one Allah.
