Congress Gathers 41 District Chiefs in Abhanpur
A determined effort to rebuild Congress's organisational muscle in Chhattisgarh is underway at Agrawal Bhavan in Abhanpur, near Raipur. All 41 newly appointed district Congress presidents of the state are taking part in a 10-day residential training camp that began on June 20, organised by the training department of the All India Congress Committee. The camp is not simply a series of briefings; its stated aim is to equip the district leaders with practical skills in grassroots politics, public outreach and running mass movements.
Rahul Gandhi Conducts a Hands-On Session
On the second day of the camp, Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, flew into Raipur and went directly from the airport to the training venue in Abhanpur. He remained there for nearly 4 hours, engaging the district presidents in a wide-ranging, two-way conversation. Rather than delivering a top-down address, he listened to each president individually, offered feedback on their challenges and shared methods for revitalising their local organisations. Prior to the group session, Gandhi also sat with senior state leaders for a formal review of the party's condition and organisational health across Chhattisgarh. His consistent message was that direct engagement from the national leadership is the surest way to restore confidence at the district level.
Spreading Congress Ideology Down to the Booth
The clearest instruction Gandhi gave the assembled district chiefs was to build the party's presence all the way down to the booth level. He told them plainly that no electoral ground can be won unless Congress ideology reaches every village. The district presidents were directed to remain embedded among ordinary people, understand their concerns at close range and raise those issues in a manner that actually lands. The camp's curriculum reinforces this through field visits and practical political exercises alongside classroom sessions, giving participants hands-on experience in public contact and movement-building.
Planning a Big Agitation on Water, Forest and Land
The camp carries a significant political agenda as well. Congress is preparing for a large-scale agitation in Chhattisgarh built around the issues of water, forest and land, encapsulated in the rallying phrase "Jal, Jungle, Zameen." The party alleges that the rights of tribals and rural communities in the state are under sustained attack. Gandhi has directed the district presidents that Congress will pursue this fight on two fronts simultaneously: in the streets and inside the legislature.
Central Leadership Signals Chhattisgarh Is a Priority
Gandhi's personal presence at the training camp has sent an unmistakable signal to party workers that Chhattisgarh occupies an important place in Congress's national strategy ahead of upcoming elections. The party is banking on these 41 district presidents to carry the lessons of the 10-day camp back to their constituencies and inject renewed energy into the organisation across the state.
