Trinamool Congress (TMC) Member of Parliament Kalyan Banerjee has been suspended from the Lok Sabha for the entire duration of the ongoing monsoon session. The stringent disciplinary action comes in the wake of allegations that he used derogatory and abusive language against his former party colleagues, Kakoli Ghosh and Sayani Ghosh, during a heated altercation inside the lower house. With this ruling in effect, the senior parliamentarian will be entirely barred from attending the house or participating in any legislative proceedings until the session concludes.
Argument Inside the Lok Sabha Chamber
The chain of events that culminated in this suspension unfolded during a period when the formal Lok Sabha proceedings were temporarily adjourned. The adjournment had been called due to intense continuous uproar and vocal protests from the opposition benches over various issues. However, the pause in official business did not bring calm. During this break, a fierce verbal clash suddenly erupted within the confines of the Lok Sabha chamber itself. Eyewitness accounts suggest that Kalyan Banerjee was seen actively engaging in an aggressive argument with several Members of Parliament belonging to the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI).
Intervention by Fellow Parliamentarians
The argument primarily involved Kalyan Banerjee confronting a specific group of NCPI leaders. This group prominently included Shatabdi Roy, Mitali Bag, and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. While the exact trigger or initial comment that sparked the sudden and intense dispute remains unclear, the situation escalated rapidly on the floor of the house. Sensing the growing tension and the breakdown of decorum, several other parliamentarians from the opposition ranks felt compelled to step in as peacekeepers. These intervening MPs attempted to pacify both factions and bring order back to the chamber before the situation could worsen further. However, when concerned colleagues subsequently approached Kalyan Banerjee to inquire about the reasons behind the sudden outburst, the TMC leader chose not to offer an explanation and promptly exited the Lok Sabha premises altogether.
Complaint Escalated to the Speaker
Following the dramatic exit of the TMC parliamentarian, the aggrieved NCPI members decided they needed to escalate the matter officially. A delegation comprising Mitali Bag, Kakoli Ghosh, and several other concerned representatives bypassed informal channels and headed straight to the chamber of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Their primary objective was to formally apprise the Speaker of the altercation and register their strong objections regarding the alleged use of unparliamentary language directed at female members. Upon hearing their detailed verbal account of the incident, the Speaker reportedly instructed the NCPI delegation to submit their formal grievances in the form of a written complaint, which would serve as the basis for any subsequent official inquiry or disciplinary measure.
Disciplinary Action and Loss of Dignity
Taking serious and immediate note of the reported incident, Lok Sabha Presiding Officer Krishna Prasad Tenneti officially took the chair to announce the final decision regarding the TMC leader. While delivering the suspension ruling to the house, Tenneti emphasized in stark terms that the remarks and conduct attributed to Kalyan Banerjee had deeply hurt the dignity, respect, and established decorum of the parliamentary institution. As a direct consequence of this firm ruling, the suspended parliamentarian loses all privileges to enter the house, participate in crucial debates, or vote on any legislative business for the remaining days of the current monsoon session.
The Political Context: A Divided Bengal Delegation
This direct confrontation is deeply rooted in the recent and volatile political shifts involving West Bengal's representation. Following the Trinamool Congress's defeat in the state assembly elections, Mamata Banerjee's party witnessed a massive and unprecedented internal rebellion. A substantial and influential block of 20 TMC Members of Parliament openly defied the party's high command and officially crossed over to align with the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI). Since this major political realignment altered the parliamentary mathematics, these rebel MPs have been allotted distinct, separate seating arrangements in the Lok Sabha, physically distanced from their former TMC colleagues. This ongoing, underlying political friction and bitterness clearly boiled over into open hostility during the recent chamber altercation.
