The Tamil Nadu Assembly witnessed intense political exchanges on Friday as Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin confronted Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay over allegations of corruption involving the previous DMK administration. Responding to the Chief Minister's earlier claims that files detailing corrupt practices would be revealed when appropriate, Udhayanidhi challenged the government to immediately bring out any concrete evidence and take prompt legal action rather than making rhetoric in the House.
Udhayanidhi Demands Immediate Disclosure of Corruption Files
Udhayanidhi questioned the continued delay by the state administration in presenting the documents to the public. He emphasized that if the governing TVK party possesses genuine evidence of wrongdoing during the former DMK tenure, it should not hesitate to initiate official proceedings. Criticizing the tone adopted by the Chief Minister during legislative proceedings, Udhayanidhi remarked that the Assembly is a space for governance rather than cinematic dialogue delivery. He directly asked why the Chief Minister was holding back the files and sarcastically questioned whether he was waiting for an astrologer to set a favorable date to release them.
Government Defense and Minister's Response
Although Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay refrained from responding directly to Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks during the floor debate, the state School Education Minister stepped in to defend the ruling administration. The minister reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining transparency in public administration and reassured the Assembly that the files concerning alleged irregularities would indeed be placed before the public at the right time.
Background of the Political Clash
The confrontation in the Assembly follows statements made by Chief Minister Vijay on Wednesday, where he asserted that he held files related to alleged corruption across three specific government departments. At that time, Vijay had issued a warning to former DMK ministers and legislators, advising them against creating a situation that would force the administration to open those records, while repeating that disclosures would occur when the timing was suitable.
Repeated Disruption and Legislative Tension
Following the sharp exchanges between DMK and TVK legislators, the House witnessed chaos as members from both sides engaged in heated arguments and shouted slogans against each other. The confrontation led to a temporary disruption of legislative business before order was restored and proceedings resumed. This incident builds upon previous tensions in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, where on August 7, ruling TVK and opposition DMK members engaged in severe debates over financial management, corruption charges, and the implementation of various public welfare schemes across the state.
