A major tragedy was narrowly averted in Phagi town under Jaipur Rural during an ongoing religious procession, as a swift and courageous act by a police constable saved an 18-year-old pilgrim from drowning in a deep stepwell. The victim had slipped off the stone steps while bathing near a popular temple complex, triggering immediate panic among surrounding devotees. Demonstrating extraordinary bravery, the deployed constable jumped straight into the deep water in full uniform to pull the teenager to safety.
Foot Slip Leads to Fall into Deep Stepwell
The emergency unfolded during the 61st annual Lakhi Padyatra dedicated to Shri Diggi Kalyan Ji Maharaj. As the massive pilgrimage procession made a stop near the famous Sitaram Ji Temple in Phagi, devotees gathered around the adjacent ancient stepwell. Eighteen-year-old pilgrim Divyansh, son of Gauri Shankar and a resident of Niwana village within the Govindgarh police station area, stepped down the stepwell stairs to bathe. While bathing, his foot slipped on the wet steps, causing him to lose his balance and plunge into the deep water below. As Divyansh struggled in the water, shouting and commotion erupted among bystanders, who frantically yelled for emergency help.
Constable Mukesh Kumar Leaps In Without Hesitation
Stationed nearby for procession security, Constable Mukesh Kumar heard the urgent cries for assistance and sprinted to the stepwell. Attached to the Office of the Additional Superintendent of Police in Dudu and detailed to duty for the pilgrimage, Mukesh Kumar assessed the peril in seconds. Without taking off his heavy khaki uniform or hesitating, he dived directly into the stepwell's deep water. Submerging beneath the surface, the constable searched for the drowning youth and, after intense effort, secured a firm grip on Divyansh. He navigated through the water to pull the teenager back to the safety of the stepwell bank, effectively saving his life.
Devotees Cheer as Grateful Family Expresses Thanks
Witnessing the successful rescue, thousands of assembled pilgrims cheered enthusiastically for the police force and expressed relief. Divyansh's family members, overwhelmed with emotion, thanked Constable Mukesh Kumar tearfully, noting that his split-second decision prevented an irreparable loss. Senior officers of the Jaipur Rural Police and Police Inspector Pushpendra Banshiwal commended the officer's heroic intervention, describing it as an exemplary display of dedication, bravery, and humanitarian service by law enforcement personnel.
