Taking a significant step toward the potential implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the government of Chhattisgarh has established a five-member high-level committee. The panel will be headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai. Other members appointed to this committee include Shatrughan Singh, M.K. Raut, Mohan Pawar, and Jyoti Rani Singh.
Responsibilities and Objectives of the Committee
The state administration has entrusted the committee with the task of drafting a formal UCC structure to be submitted to the government. Beyond drafting, the team is expected to provide essential legal suggestions and administrative recommendations. The government emphasized that any further decisions will only be finalized after extensive consultations with experts and various segments of society.
Reviewing Current Legal Frameworks
The committee is tasked first with conducting a comprehensive study of the existing legal landscape in Chhattisgarh. Following this, it will assess the feasibility of applying a uniform code across matters such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, succession, adoption, and other family-related laws. Throughout its tenure, the committee will seek feedback from citizens, social organizations, legal professionals, and other relevant stakeholders. Furthermore, the committee will analyze the implementation of UCC in other states. After synthesizing all these factors, the committee will present its comprehensive draft to the state government.
Government Strategy Moving Forward
Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai stated that the formal process for implementing the UCC in Chhattisgarh has now begun with the formation of this committee. Deputy Chief Minister Arun Sao added that the team would prepare its report by incorporating suggestions from all sections of the community. Once the report is ready, the government will review the findings and determine the next steps in the process, ensuring that the final decision addresses the interests of all citizens.
