A severe political controversy has gripped Punjab following the death of thirty-five-year-old Daljit Singh in the Mansa district. The incident escalated rapidly when family members carrying Daljit's body toward an active demonstration site, where a protest was underway with the body of anti-drug campaigner Parvinder Singh Jhonta, were reportedly intercepted. The family alleged that law enforcement personnel forcibly seized the deceased man's body. They further stated that officers compelled them to sign blank documents before taking Daljit's father and son away, prompting Daljit's wife and relatives to launch a sit-in demonstration against the authorities.
Contradictory Narratives Between Law Enforcement and Relatives
A stark contradiction has emerged between the account provided by Daljit Singh's family and the official narrative of the Punjab Police. The grieving relatives maintain that Daljit succumbed to a drug overdose. Conversely, the police administration has disputed this explanation, asserting that Daljit was murdered as a result of personal enmity. According to police statements, unidentified assailants abandoned his body on a roadway before fleeing the scene. Officers announced that three suspects have been taken into custody in connection with the case, maintaining that a thorough probe will soon clarify the facts.
However, Daljit's wife, leading the protest against local authorities, accused the police of fabricating claims to cover up the incident. She alleged that Mansa police are exerting continuous pressure on the family to suppress the matter. The protesting family members are demanding an impartial and honest investigation into the exact circumstances of his death, alongside administrative accountability and disciplinary action against the police officials involved in handling the situation.
Opposition Front Mounts Coordinated Attack on Bhagwant Mann Administration
As news of the standoff spread, prominent leaders from the Shiromani Akali Dal, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Congress visited Mansa to express solidarity with Daljit's family, escalating their critique of the state administration. Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur criticized the government, stating that the distress of families across Punjab is being ignored by the authorities. She argued that rather than acting decisively against narcotics distributors, the police force is suppressing citizens who raise concerns regarding the spread of drugs, cautioning that voters will demand an accounting in upcoming elections.
Bharatiya Janata Party national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia also condemned the Bhagwant Mann administration, asserting that Daljit Singh died due to an overdose and that law enforcement subsequently dishonored the deceased. Bhatia alleged that personnel dragged the body along the road during the seizure, remarking that the ruling Aam Aadmi Party would face public consequences for the conduct of its police force.
Congress leader and former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, currently a Member of Parliament, also arrived in Mansa on Wednesday to consult with the family. Channi stated that Daljit died from a narcotics overdose, accusing the police of falsely categorizing the tragedy as a homicide solely to harass the bereaved relatives. The confrontation closely follows another recent flashpoint in Mansa involving the killing of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh, which had previously ignited intense public demonstrations across the district.
Ruling Aam Aadmi Party Responds to Allegations
Facing concerted criticism from across the political spectrum, representatives of the Aam Aadmi Party hit back, accusing opposition parties of exploiting personal tragedies for narrow electoral advantages. Party spokesperson Baltej Pannu reiterated that Daljit was murdered, rejecting claims of an overdose cover-up. Pannu went on to demand an inquiry into whether opposition leaders, by disputing the murder investigation, were effectively providing cover for the actual perpetrators of the crime.
