Political friction in Punjab has intensified once again as legal challenges mount for senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader and former cabinet minister Bikram Singh Majithia. The state vigilance department has moved forward by filing a fresh supplementary chargesheet against him in connection with a disproportionate assets case. This latest development has immediately triggered sharp political reactions across the region, drawing intense debate from various political factions regarding the ongoing investigation.
Legal Sections And Timeline Of The Case
Investigators have invoked sections 13(1)(e) and 13(2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, along with section 120-B of the Indian Penal Code, in this legal proceeding. The entire inquiry spans a decade from 2007 to 2017. Following initial probes, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau had registered FIR number 22 on June 25, 2025, leading to his arrest. Subsequently, on August 22, 2025, a massive chargesheet running into approximately 40,000 pages was submitted, highlighting substantial financial transactions. However, Bikram Singh Majithia secured regular bail from the Supreme Court on February 2, 2026, and remains out of custody.
Ruling Party Accusations
The filing of the supplementary chargesheet has provided the ruling party with a fresh platform to target the opposition leadership. Representatives of the administration claimed that massive financial movements were routed through corporate bank accounts. Punjab cabinet minister Harpal Cheema noted that alongside Bikram Majithia, the documents also name individuals such as Gajjpat Singh Grewal and Harpreet Gulati, pointing toward a broader web of financial scrutiny.
Defense And Warnings From The Leader
Rejecting all allegations outright, Bikram Singh Majithia maintained that he is being targeted through fabricated charges because he exposes the administration. Issuing a direct challenge, he stated that no legitimate chargesheet has ever tied him to illegal substance networks. Furthermore, he cautioned government officials against acting in a partisan manner, reminding them that administrations change and accountability under the constitution remains paramount.
