Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who has spent roughly six decades in state politics, has voiced discontent regarding his standing within the Bharatiya Janata Party. He stated that since joining the organisation, he has not been consulted on Punjab's state affairs in the manner he had anticipated. At the same time, the veteran leader clarified that he has no immediate intention of walking away from the BJP to stage a return to the Congress.
Discontent Over Marginalisation in State Affairs
Addressing questions on Punjab politics in New Delhi on Friday, Captain Amarinder Singh referenced his extensive career in public life. He noted that over six decades, he has observed numerous political cycles and shifts across the border state. Emphasising that he is not the sole leader who comprehends the state's socio-political dynamics, he mentioned that several experienced figures who joined along with him share similar insights. Despite this collective experience, a phase emerged where key deliberations occurred without seeking his counsel.
Evaluating Four Years and the Right to Speak
Reflecting on his tenure of nearly four years alongside the BJP after officially joining in September 2022, Captain Amarinder Singh remarked that he had effectively achieved very little during this stretch. He maintained that as a resident of Punjab, offering perspectives on pressing state issues remains his core responsibility. Expressing candid thoughts, he pointed out, should not be misconstrued as an intention to defect from the party. He observed that when an established leader joins an outfit, there is a reasonable expectation of institutional consultation. While disclaiming absolute mastery over every local question, he asserted that he understands the state's pulse thoroughly.
Past Trajectory and Stepping Away From Electoral Contests
Dismissing persistent rumours regarding an imminent return to the Congress, the 84-year-old leader cited pivotal moments from his earlier political path. He recalled resigning from the Congress in the aftermath of Operation Blue Star to join the Shiromani Akali Dal, before eventually rejoining the Congress years later. He observed that political affiliations change over time, but that history does not imply he is preparing to depart from the BJP today. Furthermore, he noted that his days of actively running as a candidate in electoral contests are now effectively behind him.
The 2027 Assembly Elections and Strategic Realignment
Looking ahead to the Punjab assembly elections scheduled for 2027, Captain Amarinder Singh offered several strategic observations. He remarked that it remains uncertain which political formation currently commands the advantage in the state. To build a credible path toward forming a government in Punjab, he suggested that the BJP should contemplate reviving its traditional alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal. In his view, rekindling this historic partnership is essential if the national party intends to establish a governing majority in the state.
These frank observations follow public interest surrounding a remark made by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in August. Responding to an online query, Rahul Gandhi had identified Captain Amarinder Singh as his preferred figure within the BJP, sharing fond memories of working alongside him. Nonetheless, Captain Amarinder Singh reiterated that he has made no declaration or plan regarding a comeback to his former party.
