The festival of Diwali is celebrated across India with a diverse array of unique traditions and local customs. While Narak Chaturdashi is marked elsewhere by worshiping Lord Krishna or offering lamps to Yamraj, the celebration of small Diwali takes a completely distinct form in Karauli, Rajasthan. In this region, a unique tradition of lighting lamps in honor of dogs and worshiping them is observed on this day, earning the occasion the local moniker of Dog Diwali.
On the night of Narak Chaturdashi, women in many households across Karauli prepare special four-wick lamps made from dough. These lamps are lit outside the house and dedicated to dogs, accompanied by the practice of feeding them sweets and meals. According to belief, these lamps illuminate the path for the messengers of death, invoking the blessings of Yamraj.
Ensuring Protection and Prosperity
According to local astrologer and ritual expert Pandit Manish Upadhyay, this tradition has been practiced in Karauli for a long time and is rooted in deep religious beliefs. In Hindu traditions, the dog is closely associated with Yamraj. It is believed that worshiping dogs and feeding them on small Diwali appeases Yamraj, which ensures family protection and sustained peace and prosperity.
Special Four-Wicked Lamps Outside Homes
The standout feature of this tradition is the four-wick dough lamp meticulously prepared by women and lit outside homes on the night of small Diwali. Many families dedicate these lamps directly to dogs. Feeding dogs alongside the ritual of lighting the lamps forms a vital part of this observance.
A Unique Sight Across the Streets
On the night of small Diwali, when lamps flicker outside various homes in the alleys of Karauli, the atmosphere transforms into something truly special. While preparations for Diwali continue inside homes, the lamps lit for dogs give this festival a distinct identity. Families who uphold this tradition believe it is not merely a religious ritual, but also a message of kindness and love toward animals.
