A serious tragedy was averted in Society Nagar in Rajasthan's Pali when an underground sewage leak caused a street to collapse without warning. The structural integrity beneath the road in Ward 53 had eroded completely due to persistent sewer seepage, leaving the asphalt hollow underneath. As ten-year-old Jignesh was walking through the street, the road gave way beneath him, opening up a dangerous sinkhole. Fortunately, the child's father was standing right beside him and reacted instantaneously, grabbing his son's hand and pulling him up before he could fall into the cavity, preventing what could have been a catastrophic mishap.
The Sudden Cave-In and an Instinctive Rescue
Residents in Society Nagar explained that defective and leaking sewer pipelines had compromised the foundation beneath the thoroughfare over an extended period. With constant subsurface moisture eroding the soil beneath the paved road, a massive void had developed undetected under the tarmac. The road suddenly caved inwards, instantly creating a deep crater in the middle of the street.
Ten-year-old Jignesh happened to walk over the compromised section precisely when the pavement gave way. As the ground sank, the boy lost his footing and began slipping straight into the void. His father, positioned right next to him, showed exceptional alertness and acted without losing a second. Reaching out immediately, he firmly caught Jignesh by the hand and hauled him to safety. Because of the father's swift intervention, the child avoided plunging fully into the crater and escaped without sustained injuries, though the horrifying incident left neighbourhood residents badly shaken.
Municipal Administration Fails to Respond to Urgent Alerts
Upon receiving word of the collapse and the close call, local councillor Kaluram Jat from Ward 53 rushed to the spot. Taking note of the hazardous situation, the councillor immediately called top officials and relevant technical staff of the Pali Municipal Corporation to apprise them of the emergency. Local residents anticipated that the municipal apparatus would swing into action right away, cordon off the dangerous breach, and initiate emergency restoration work.
However, the municipal authorities remained entirely unresponsive. Despite repeated alerts and requests describing the grave hazard to public safety, not a single corporation staff member or repair team showed up at the location. The municipal body's lethargic attitude triggered sharp resentment among local residents, as the open hole on an active residential road presented an imminent hazard to motorists and pedestrians alike.
Local Councillor Funds Emergency Brick Infill from Own Pocket
Faced with administrative paralysis and the refusal of civic staff to turn up, councillor Kaluram Jat took matters into his own hands. Placing pedestrian and vehicular safety above official delays, he arranged for construction bricks and aggregate using his personal funds. Standing on-site to supervise the work, the councillor had the hazardous void filled and temporarily leveled so that commuters and passersby would not fall into the cavity.
Kaluram Jat pointed out that the municipal corporation has displayed total indifference toward safeguarding public life and property. He noted that since no municipal personnel arrived despite being formally alerted, he was compelled to spend his personal money on filling the cavity to protect children, senior citizens, and general commuters from potential harm.
Chronic Sewer Infrastructure Failures Plague Entire City
The road collapse in Society Nagar is not an isolated incident in the town. Neighbourhood residents noted that structural sinkholes caused by ruptured sewer pipelines have repeatedly occurred in the locality in the past. In fact, civic infrastructure challenges have spread to almost every single ward and neighbourhood across Pali, where defective sewer lines frequently rupture and overflow.
Foul water constantly spills onto roads and inner lanes because of persistent pipeline leakages, filling residential surroundings with stench and triggering constant worries regarding infectious diseases. With subsurface cavities weakening streets from below, two-wheeler riders, car drivers, and pedestrians navigate everyday routes under the persistent threat of sudden cave-ins. Citizens have accused the civic body of focusing strictly on collecting municipal taxes while delivering zero performance when it comes to essential infrastructure and safety standards. Residents have urged civic authorities not to wait for a fatal disaster and instead undertake an extensive, priority overhaul of the city's entire drainage and sewage system.
