The historic marble city of Makrana in Rajasthan's Didwana-Kuchaman district is breaking conventional ground for its upcoming Vijayadashami celebration with an extraordinary structural transformation. Instead of mounting the towering effigy of Ravana on a standard ground dais, organizers are perching the 80-foot effigy atop an elaborate replica of the mythological flying chariot, the Pushpak Viman. While historical festivals in the city previously showcased the demon king on ceremonial elephants or armored battle chariots, this aerial vehicle representation marks an unprecedented design departure intended to captivate regional audiences.
A 105-Year Heritage Marks Its Tallest Landmark
The grand public spectacle is managed by the Charbhuja Seva Samiti, whose teams are actively coordinating preparations across the festival grounds and crafting stations. Sharing logistical and historical dimensions of the fair, the patron of the committee, Thakur Chandraveer Singh Chauhan, alongside local municipal councillor and secretary Mahesh Pujari, highlighted that organized effigy burning here dates back uninterrupted to 1919. Across Rajasthan, the scale and turnout of Makrana's festivities are widely regarded as second only to the famed celebrations in Kota.
Historically, the central effigy in the city was anchored at a standard height of 75 feet. To mark a new milestone in a celebration spanning more than 105 years, the organizing body made the executive decision to raise the main structure to 80 feet. This represents the single largest scale enhancement the event has seen since its inception in the early twentieth century.
Empowering 50 Local Craftsmen Under Vocal for Local
Rather than hiring external event agencies or outstation artisans, the committee chose to entrust the intricate design entirely to home-grown talent. Approximately 50 artisans based in Makrana have spent the last 25 days working around the clock to erect the wooden framing, paper skin, and intricate detailing of both the demon king and his celestial vessel. This localized workforce approach offers a direct manifestation of the prime minister's Vocal for Local philosophy, handing regional craftsmen an exceptional platform to demonstrate their technical and artistic prowess.
Budget Estimates and Regional Audience Influx
Committee executives calculate that building the comprehensive installation, integrating the mechanical frame of the Pushpak Viman, and finalizing the pyrotechnic display will involve an expenditure between 2.50 lakh and 3.50 lakh rupees. On the evening of Vijayadashami, accompanied by synchronized fireworks across the night sky, the 80-foot structure will be consumed in flames, creating a memorable spectacle for tens of thousands of onlookers.
The draw of Makrana's Dussehra transcends urban municipal borders. Residents from dozens of neighboring villages and rural hamlets converge upon the main grounds in dense throngs, turning the entire precinct into a bustling fair filled with market stalls and traditional pageantry. Enthusiasm is mounting rapidly throughout the district as people await the first public unveiling of Ravana's mythological celestial chariot.
