The state Panchayati Raj Department officially decided to suspend the process, which was originally slated to take place in the middle of September. This decision has already been communicated to the State Election Commission, effectively halting the immediate preparations for the rural polls as the administration shifts its entire focus toward concluding the urban local body elections first.
Overburdened Administration Forces Schedule Change
The primary reason behind this sudden postponement lies in the intense administrative involvement required for the ongoing municipal elections across the state. Key administrative officers, including District Collectors and their subordinate staff, are currently completely occupied with managing the procedures of the urban local body polls. Because these officials are responsible for overseeing both municipal and rural election processes, conducting the complex reservation lottery simultaneously was deemed practically impossible. Consequently, the government decided to step back and defer the lottery dates to ensure smooth administrative execution.
According to the previously finalized schedule, the reservation lottery was structured to take place over two consecutive days. On September 17, the administration was supposed to determine the reserved seats for Zila Parishad members, Pradhans, and Panchayat Samiti members. Following this, on September 18, the lottery for the posts of Sarpanch and Ward Panch was scheduled. Both of these crucial events have now been deferred indefinitely, leaving local aspirants in a state of anticipation.
New Dates Tied to Municipal Election Conclusion
The Panchayati Raj Department has clarified that the new dates for the reservation lottery will not be announced immediately. Instead, the rescheduled program will only be drawn up once the entire process for the urban local bodies is completed. Specifically, the department has informed the State Election Commission that they will wait for the elections of the chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of the municipal bodies to conclude before deciding on the fresh dates for the rural body reservation lottery.
