A Sunday morning meant to be lighthearted turned tragic for a family in Rajasthan's Dungarpur district. Six people from Likhi Badi village in the Dhambola police station area went to bathe in a nearby river, and four of them drowned, while villagers rescued two children in time. Three of the deceased are siblings, and the news has left the entire area in mourning.
How the accident unfolded
According to details that have emerged, some children from Likhi Badi village and a few guests staying at their home had gone to the river on Sunday morning for a swim. No one imagined that the outing would turn fatal within minutes. Reports say that six people in all, including three siblings, went to bathe at an anicut near the village. While swimming, they suddenly got caught in deep water and all six began to drown. As soon as villagers in the area learned of the accident, they immediately launched a rescue operation. Their quick thinking helped pull two children out of the water safely, but the remaining four could not be saved. Their bodies were later recovered from the water with the help of police and villagers.
Four lives lost
The accident claimed the lives of 15 year old Ishita, 20 year old Prateek and 24 year old Hina Damor, all residents of Likhi Badi village. Also among the dead is 20 year old Ronak Parmar, a guest who had come from Palanpur in Gujarat, who also drowned in the tragic incident. The loss of four lives from the same family and their relatives in one go has sent shockwaves through the entire area.
Two children pulled to safety
Villagers managed to save two of the six people who had gone into the water. Fifteen year old Rajveer, a resident of Palanpur in Gujarat, and 11 year old Jaisingh, a resident of Mehsana in Gujarat, were rescued from drowning thanks to the presence of mind shown by people at the spot. Both children are reported to be completely safe.
Police response
As soon as word of the accident reached them, Dhambola police station personnel rushed to the scene. The bodies of all four victims have been shifted to the mortuary at CHC Simalwara for post mortem examination. A heavy police force has been deployed in the area since the incident, and peace is being maintained at the spot. The tragic accident has once again shaken the entire region, with the affected family now in deep mourning.
