A tragic incident unfolded in the Srikaranpur area of Sriganganagar district on Sunday, resulting in the drowning deaths of two young workers in a farm water reservoir. The accident took place in a field near a brick kiln located close to the Bharatmala highway bypass near Padampur road. Both individuals had arrived at the brick kiln to work as daily wage labourers, and the sudden tragedy has cast a pall of gloom over the entire region.
According to available details, the two workers were washing their hands and feet by the edge of a water reservoir in the field after finishing their chores. Suddenly, one of the men lost his footing and slipped into the deep water of the reservoir. Seeing his companion drowning, the second youth immediately jumped in to rescue him. However, he too was pulled into the deep water, and within moments, both individuals vanished beneath the surface.
The sudden turn of events triggered panic among people nearby upon receiving news of the accident. Local residents rushed to the spot and attempted to pull both youths out of the water. Police were immediately alerted, prompting officers to arrive at the location and initiate necessary procedures.
Victims hailed from different regions
Initial findings indicate that the two deceased belonged to different areas. One of the youths was a resident of the Padampur region, while the other hailed from the Jaitsar area. They had come to the brick kiln in search of livelihood through manual labor. Following the accident, authorities initiated steps to inform their respective families. The reservoir was reported to be quite deep, which made rescue efforts exceedingly difficult and plunged the local community into deep sorrow.
Police have taken custody of both bodies and placed them in the mortuary of the Community Health Center in Srikaranpur. Authorities are currently investigating the matter, and the bodies will be handed over to their families after the post-mortem examination is completed. Police are gathering all details regarding the exact sequence of events and the causes leading up to the tragedy. According to villagers, such agricultural water reservoirs are often dangerously deep, and the lack of adequate safety measures around them constantly poses severe accident risks. This incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for proper safety protocols around open and deep water sources.
