Situated beneath the Padao bridge in Gwalior, the Siddha Shri Manshapurna Hanuman Temple is widely recognized for its rich history spanning nearly 350 years and its distinctive customs. A remarkable aspect of this sacred destination is that locomotive pilots operating trains on the nearby tracks routinely sound their train horns as a mark of respect to the deity while passing through. Additionally, the presence of a Lord Ganesha idol seated directly above the primary statue of Hanuman serves as a major focal point for visiting devotees.
Decades of Continuous Ramayana Recitation
According to temple mahant Krishna Gopal Dubey, an unbroken recitation of the Ramayana has been conducted here without interruption since April 1, 1997. The spiritual practice commenced with a single akhand jyoti, but the number of lamps steadily multiplied over time to reach 108. The chanting echoes through the temple premises twenty-four hours a day, viewed by followers as a vital medium for divine worship and spiritual devotion.
A Lifelong Vow of Service
Representing the fourth generation dedicated to the temple, Gopal Dubey once took a solemn vow to stay away from his home for nearly 30 years. While maintaining his employment within the police department, he simultaneously devoted himself to the upkeep of the temple. Whenever the venue faced a shortage of readers, he would personally step in to conduct the continuous Ramayana readings for grueling 12-hour stretches. Following his passing on May 5, 2024, his son Krishna Gopal Dubey took over the stewardship of the temple.
Symbolism of Strength and Intellect
Mahant Krishna Gopal Dubey notes that Hanuman is revered as a symbol of physical strength, whereas Lord Ganesha represents intellect and wisdom. Worshippers place profound faith in the simultaneous darshan of both deities within the sanctuary. This generational legacy of service combined with the unending Ramayana chants gives the temple a distinctive standing among the prominent religious landmarks of Gwalior.
A Unique Cultural Landmark
The Siddha Shri Manshapurna Hanuman Temple stands out for its ancient traditions and uninterrupted rituals. The distinct practice observed by train drivers adds an extraordinary layer of local culture to the site. Consequently, the temple remains not only a center of intense religious devotion but also an integral component of Gwalior cultural identity.
