Married women observe the sacred Haritalika Teej fast to pray for the long life, safety, and well-being of their husbands. During this rigorous observance, women perform special rituals dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. According to Vindhyadham scholar Acharya Anupam Maharaj, failing to observe specific guidelines during this fast can diminish its spiritual rewards and lead to adverse consequences, making it crucial for fasting women to follow traditional rules strictly.
Refrain From Lying and Gossip
Acharya Anupam Maharaj noted that Haritalika Teej is considered one of the most sacred fasts. Women must exercise strict control over their speech and conduct on this day. It is vital to completely avoid slandering or gossiping about anyone. Furthermore, fasting individuals must strictly refrain from telling lies, as doing so strips away the religious merit earned through the rituals.
The Importance of Night Vigil
According to traditional customs, women observing the Haritalika Teej fast must avoid sleeping throughout the night. The scholar advised that participants should spend the night engaged in prayers, worship, and devotional singing dedicated to Lord Shiva. Maintaining a night vigil yields special divine blessings and helps drive away hardships and crises from one's life.
Rules Regarding Thirst and Dietary Restrictions
If fasting women experience severe thirst during the day, they should repeatedly take ritual baths as the primary method to cope with it. Additionally, touching salt on this day is strictly forbidden. Women must also ensure that they do not touch non-vegetarian food items, garlic, or onions under any circumstances during the duration of the fast.
Avoiding Travel and Borrowed Items
Acharya Anupam Maharaj emphasized that women keeping the Haritalika Teej fast should avoid traveling on this day. It is best to stay put and refrain from undertaking journeys. Moreover, bringing any item from another person's home into one's own house on this day is discouraged, as it is believed to invite poverty and displease Lord Shiva and Goddess Lakshmi.
