The Ram Janmabhoomi temple in Ayodhya has become the focal point of a fresh discussion regarding its internal management. While concerns over financial irregularities and donation theft have been circulating, a significant group of saints and seers has now voiced a strong demand for the appointment of a chief priest. The religious community argues that to uphold the sanctity of temple traditions and ensure the smooth execution of daily rituals, filling this vacant position is an absolute necessity. The office has remained unoccupied since the demise of the former chief priest, Acharya Satyendra Das Maharaj, sparking concerns about the current administrative gap.
The Essential Role of a Chief Priest
Mahant Shashikant Das of the Charo Dham Mandir, located at Ram Kacheri, highlighted that the presence of a chief priest is a fundamental part of the Sanatan tradition observed in prominent temples and maths across the country. According to the Mahant, the duties of a chief priest extend far beyond individual worship. They act as mentors to other priests, providing necessary guidance and ensuring that religious discipline remains intact. Their presence is vital for maintaining the spiritual decorum expected within such a landmark site.
Need for Religious and Administrative Coordination
Expanding on his viewpoint, Mahant Shashikant Das stated that a world-renowned institution like the Ram Mandir cannot afford to deviate from this established structural tradition. Even though multiple priests are currently performing their duties at the site, there is a clear absence of a unifying leader who can coordinate their efforts and provide authoritative direction. In the event of procedural errors or disputes regarding religious protocols, a chief priest serves as the primary figure responsible for establishing accountability and finding appropriate resolutions. Without this central authority, managing the complexity of religious operations becomes increasingly difficult.
Call to the Trust for Action
Following the departure of Acharya Satyendra Das Maharaj, the saints have formally appealed to the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust to take swift action. While the trust officials are managing their respective administrative tasks, the saints emphasize that the temple requires a scholar and an experienced seer to lead the team of priests. They believe that such an appointment is essential to ensure the entire system remains organized, disciplined, and transparent. The religious leaders have urged the trust to honor Sanatan traditions by selecting a suitable candidate soon, ensuring that the temple’s religious activities continue to be conducted in a seamless and orderly fashion.
