The renowned Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple in Kerala wrote a fresh chapter in its history on Sunday by hosting a record-breaking number of weddings in a single day. Temple Devaswom Board officials confirmed that 416 marriages were successfully solemnized within a span of just seven hours, marking the highest single-day tally ever recorded at the shrine. According to the Malayalam calendar, the first Sunday of the Chingam month is considered extremely auspicious for matrimonial ceremonies, prompting a massive influx of devotees and couples seeking to tie the knot at the sacred venue.
Auspicious Timing and Previous Records
The surge of couples wanting to marry on this revered date led to a total of 442 scheduled weddings, which included spot bookings. This phenomenal turnout easily surpassed the previous single-day record of 334 weddings, which had been set on September 8, 2024. The day's proceedings began in the early hours when Devaswom Board President A. V. Gopinath lit a ceremonial lamp at the first mandapam situated near the eastern gateway of the temple.
Early Morning Start and Six Mandapams
The wedding rituals officially commenced at 4:10 AM and continued without a break until 12:45 PM, except for brief pauses when the temple doors were closed for customary rituals like Usha pooja and Panthiradi pooja. The very first marriage of the day was solemnized between Arnaw Mohan Kumar from Thalassery and Vidya Anand Raj from Pazhayangadi amidst traditional musical accompaniment, following which ceremonies began across all designated platforms.
Crowd Control and Security Measures
To accommodate the extraordinary rush, the temple premises were equipped with six specially constructed mandapams. In order to prevent overcrowding, authorities restricted the number of guests accompanying each bride and groom to 24. Officials noted that more than 60 weddings were conducted every single hour during the peak operations.
