The Maa Vindhyavasini temple in Gonda, Uttar Pradesh, has become a major centre of deep faith for local residents. Devotees gather here every single day, and on occasions like Navratri, the queues for darshan stretch well beyond the temple premises. Large numbers of people prefer to arrive early in the morning to seek the goddess's blessings. The story behind this temple is just as fascinating and unusual, and it still leaves people astonished when they hear it.
A Weekly Pilgrimage to Vindhyachal
According to temple mahant Shashi Kumar, a devotee living in Gonda years ago was a devout follower of Maa Vindhyavasini. He initially travelled to Vindhyachal once a month to have darshan of the goddess. Over time his devotion deepened so much that he began making the trip every week instead of once a month. But after he got married, travelling to Vindhyachal so frequently was no longer possible for him.
A Divine Form Found Beneath a Neem Tree
Mahant Shashi Kumar recounts that, faced with this dilemma, the devotee prayed to Maa Vindhyavasini, asking that if he could no longer visit her regularly, she would come and settle near his own home instead. As the story goes, a few days later a dog was seen digging into the ground beneath a neem tree close to his house. When people dug at the spot, they found a divine form of the goddess, no bigger than a gram seed, emerging from within the soil. Everyone present was left stunned by this unusual sight, and it was taken as a sign of the goddess's own grace.
A Temple Built in 1995 as the Form Kept Growing
Word of the discovery spread quickly through the surrounding area, and devotees gradually began arriving at the spot in growing numbers. In response to this rising faith and footfall, a proper temple was built at the same site in 1995. Since then, the divine form itself is said to have kept growing in size, and what once looked no bigger than a gram seed now stands at roughly 1 to 2 feet in height. It is this extraordinary change that has made the temple one of the most unique and miraculous religious sites in Gonda.
A Belief That Wishes Made With a True Heart Come True
Even today, devotees travel from far and wide in large numbers to seek darshan of Maa Vindhyavasini at this temple. Local residents and devotees hold a firm belief that anyone who worships the goddess with a sincere heart and shares their wish will have that wish granted.
