Navratri Durga Saptashati Rules: Important guidelines and powerful mantra precautions for Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami

Important rules and precautions to keep in mind while chanting Durga Saptashati on Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami during Navratri.

As Navratri moves towards its culmination, preparations for Maha Ashtami and Maha Navami pujas are underway in households. During this period, the Chandi path is performed in some homes after completing prayers on Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, and Maha Navami. According to religious beliefs, reciting the Chandi path daily helps eliminate all kinds of troubles and reduces the malefic effects of planetary influences. This recitation keeps the surrounding environment positive and brings the blessings of the Mother Goddess for success in every area of life. However, performing the Chandi path on these specific dates requires special attention to certain matters because this is no ordinary recitation. The text contains several powerful initiated mantras that demand various precautions during chanting. Knowing the proper rules is essential before proceeding with the recitation.

Structure and Chapters of the Chandi Path

The Chandi path, also referred to as Durga Saptashati or Devi Mahatmya, forms a part of the Markandeya Purana and was composed by Sage Vedavyasa. The text comprises 13 chapters and 700 verses. Since sapta means seven and shata means hundred, it is called Saptashati. This scripture describes the victory of Durga over demons such as Mahishasura. Proper recitation follows specific methods, including Tryangam and Navangam, which are devoutly read during Navratri or across one, three, or seven sittings.

Following the Two Methods of Recitation

Durga Saptashati should be recited with proper procedures and purity, and it can be completed in a single day or over nine days during Navratri or any auspicious occasion. Devotees can choose among various methods based on time, devotion, and occasion. Those who need assistance in reciting Durga Saptashati in one sitting can follow the Tryangam and Navangam methods. Proper setup requires placing a red cloth facing east and installing an image or idol of Goddess Mata Durga upon it. Before starting, the area must be purified, and prayers offered using vermilion, rice, and flowers. Devotees should apply red lead on their forehead and perform Achamana four times for element purification.

Essential Rituals During the Practice

Bathers should wear clean clothes and begin the recitation while meditating on Goddess Durga. The Durga Kavach should be read first, as tradition dictates that the Saptashati path should not commence without it. A ghee lamp should be lit in front of the image of Goddess Durga. Upon completing the regular reading, an aarti must be performed followed by seeking forgiveness from the goddess. Offerings such as sugar drops are considered highly auspicious to present to Goddess Durga. After the aarti, the prasad should be distributed and prayers for household prosperity offered to the mother.

From the First to the Sixth Chapter of Saptashati

The first chapter narrates the slaying of the demons Madhu and Kaitabha, while the second describes the descent of Goddess Durga from the energy of the gods and the destruction of Mahishasura's army. The third chapter details the elimination of Mahishasura and his commander. The fourth chapter features prayers offered to the goddess by Indra and other deities, the fifth chapter portrays the description of the goddess's beauty by Chanda and Munda before the demon Shumbha, and the sixth chapter depicts the death of Dhumralochana.

Concluding Chapters and Core Mantras

The seventh chapter recounts the slaying of Chanda and Munda, and the eighth details the defeat of Raktabija. Chapters nine and ten contain the narrative of the slaying of Shumbha and Nishumbha. The eleventh chapter provides information regarding the prayers offered by gods and goddesses along with the boons granted. The twelfth and thirteenth chapters elaborate on the glory of the goddess's character and the story of the merchant Suratha, who received a boon from her. These manifestations of the goddess and her martial forms established the foundation for the worship of Navadurga. The 700 verses are divided into three parts: Prathama Charitra, Madhyama Charitra, and Uttara Charitra, representing Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati respectively. Chanting verses like Sarvamangala Mangalye brings auspiciousness, while others offer spiritual protection and freedom from fear.
