The historical town of Ghazipur in Uttar Pradesh houses the revered Baba Koteshwar Nath Temple near Cheetnath Ghat, a site deeply tied to ancient spiritual heritage rather than modern lore. Recognized across traditional lore as 'Chhoti Kashi' or 'Lahuri Kashi', Ghazipur owes this prestigious title to an extraordinary legend dating back to the Ramayana era. The temple stands as a testament to deep-rooted devotion that originated during the Treta Yug.
King Gadhi's Penance and Lord Shiva's Boon
Elaborating on the sacred lineage of the temple, priest Bawan Dash explains that King Gadhi, who was the father of the legendary sage King Vishwamitra, selected this very spot near the riverbank for rigorous meditation during the Treta Yug. Moved by his unyielding austerity, Lord Bholenath manifested before King Gadhi and offered to grant him a divine boon. King Gadhi requested that the precise location where he conducted his penance be elevated to the status of Kashi.
In response, Lord Bholenath clarified that since Kashi was already in existence, this sanctified ground would henceforth be recognized as 'Chhoti Kashi' or 'Lahuri Kashi'. The principal Shivling enshrined inside the sanctum is believed to belong to the Ramayana era. Alongside the ancient Shivling, the shrine complex houses revered idols of Mata Parvati and Bhagwan Ganesh. Additionally, an idol of Kal Bhairav was consecrated within the premises approximately 30 to 40 years ago.
Scriptural Evidences from the Shiv Purana
Confirming the scriptural background of this sacred legend, priest Gopal Goswami points out that this narrative is explicitly recorded in the Shiv Purana. When King Gadhi sought to transform the place into Kashi, Lord Shiva imparted profound spiritual wisdom, observing that "where there is knowledge, there is Kashi."
According to the holy texts, Mahadev assured the king that the spiritual wisdom accessible in the original Kashi would be equally attainable to seekers in this Lahuri Kashi. Just as the banks of the Ganges in Kashi offer a gateway to liberation and spiritual purity, this sanctified abode bestows identical blessings of salvation and divine holiness upon all devotees.
Grand Celebrations and Pilgrimages During Sawan
The spiritual fervour at Baba Koteshwar Nath Temple reaches its peak during the holy month of Sawan every year. Gopal Goswami notes that devotees start gathering at the temple gates as early as 3:30 AM to catch a glimpse of the deity. On Mondays during Sawan, the influx of worshippers swells to immense proportions.
Pilgrims travel from distant regions to offer prayers and fulfill personal vows. A vast number of visitors perform sacred rituals such as Rudrabhishek and Jalabhishek, seeking peace, health, and spiritual fulfillment from Lord Shiva.
