Saturday is specifically dedicated to the deity of justice, Shani Dev. In traditional beliefs, Shani Dev is recognized as the dispenser of karmic results, rewarding humans according to their deeds. Performing rituals on this day is said to significantly mitigate the negative effects of periods like Sade Sati and Dhaiya. While offering oil to Shani Dev is a long-standing tradition on Saturdays, there are strict protocols that must be followed to ensure the offerings yield favorable results.
Proper Method for Offering Oil
Care must be taken when offering oil to Shani Dev. A primary rule is to avoid standing directly in front of the idol; instead, stand slightly to the left or right. Additionally, avoid making direct eye contact with the idol. One should focus their attention on the feet of Shani Dev while performing the offering with a calm and reverent mind.
After offering the oil, ignite a mustard oil lamp in front of the deity. Adding a few black sesame seeds to the lamp is considered highly auspicious. Throughout this process, one should chant the mantra: Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah. Once the oil has been offered, donating black sesame seeds, black gram (urad dal), and black clothing to the needy is considered very beneficial. Finally, it is auspicious to light a sesame oil lamp under a Peepal tree as well.
Restrictions and Precautions for Saturday
Certain activities should be avoided on Saturdays. Buying iron items or purchasing mustard oil for the home is generally prohibited on this day. Furthermore, one should strictly abstain from consuming tamasic (non-vegetarian or heavy/unclean) food. Avoid personal grooming activities such as cutting hair or nails. It is also important to never disrespect the poor, the helpless, the elderly, or women.
Worshiping Lord Hanuman and Additional Remedies
Worshiping Lord Hanuman on Saturdays is considered highly effective for pleasing Shani Dev. Devotees may recite the Hanuman Chalisa, Sundarkand, or Bajrang Baan. Offering water to a Peepal tree in the morning and lighting a mustard oil lamp there in the evening brings significant blessings. Additionally, feeding bread to black dogs and placing flour for ants are considered meritorious acts that help in attaining grace on this day.
