The Prophecy That Sparked Tyranny
Mathura was originally ruled by Ugrasene, but a celestial prophecy completely altered the course of history. As Kamsa was bidding farewell to his sister Devaki after her wedding, a booming voice echoed from the skies. The prophecy declared that Kamsa would meet his end at the hands of his own sister's son. Terrified by this ominous warning, Kamsa immediately ordered his guards to arrest both Devaki and her husband Vasudeva. They were thrown straight into a dark dungeon, and whenever Devaki gave birth, Kamsa brutally dashed the newborns against a stone slab.
The Manifestation of Yogmaya
In this cruel manner, Kamsa extinguished the lives of Devaki's first seven children. However, when the eighth child was due, Yogmaya manifested. As Kamsa attempted to destroy the divine infant, she slipped out of his grasp and vanished into the sky. Before disappearing, she delivered a stern warning that the one destined to vanquish him had already taken birth. Physical evidence and remnants of this turbulent era are still preserved in Mathura to this day.
Eleven Years of Captivity
The ancient prison of Kamsa is situated near the Potra Kund. Believed to be thousands of years old, this structure continues to stand as a reminder of the historical imprisonment. Local priests and custodians explain that this very site serves as a poignant reminder of Krishna's divine lineage and the suffering endured by his parents. Kamsa kept Devaki and Vasudeva imprisoned inside these walls for a grueling 11 years, while the tragic fate of their first seven children unfolded.
