The holy city of Varanasi is reverberating with chants of Bhole Nath on the second Monday of Sawan, drawing massive throngs of devotees to the sacred shrines. The atmosphere at the Kashi Vishwanath temple is filled with profound devotion as senior administrative officials of Varanasi personally showered flower petals to welcome the arriving Kanwariyas. This divine spectacle began early in the morning, following an uninterrupted influx of devotees that started late last night. On this auspicious second Monday, the presiding deity is granting audience to worshippers in the revered Gauri Shankar form. This unique opportunity occurs only once a year, as Lord Vishwanath is adorned in distinct divine manifestations on each consecutive Monday of the sacred Sawan month.
Four-Kilometer Queues and Strict Traffic Restrictions
The devotion outside the Kashi Vishwanath temple translated into an enormous four-kilometer-long queue of worshippers waiting patiently for their turn. Devotees stood in systematic lines stretching across Maidagin, Godowlia, and the Ganga Dwar areas. After taking a holy dip in the Ganges, worshippers carrying sacred river water in vessels were seen waiting for their turn to offer prayers, with these spiritual activities continuing throughout the day across Varanasi. In view of the massive rush during the Sawan Mondays and the upcoming Sawan Shivratri, authorities have imposed strict regulations on vehicular movement. Heavy vehicles have been barred from entering the city limits past 11 pm for a duration of two days. Furthermore, all routes leading directly to the Kashi Vishwanath temple have been designated as strict no-vehicle zones to ensure the safety of pedestrians.
Administrative Presence and Flower Showers by Officials
Security in and around the Kashi Vishwanath temple has been heightened significantly to manage the massive congregations. The entire zone has been divided into 4 operational zones and 13 distinct sectors, with adequate police forces deployed at every corner. On the second Monday of Sawan, top officials including the Commissioner and District Magistrate were seen showering flower petals on Shiva devotees and Kanwariyas. The elaborate security arrangements and welcoming gestures left visiting pilgrims deeply impressed. Prince Gupta, a devotee who came for the darshan, shared that the arrangements for Shiva worshippers at the temple were exceptionally well-managed, allowing him to complete the Jalabhishek within two hours and leaving him thoroughly delighted. A similar sentiment was echoed by Shyam Yadav, a visitor from Patna, who expressed complete satisfaction with the administrative arrangements at the temple premises.
Anticipation of Over Six Lakh Pilgrims
The scale of the pilgrimage on this second Monday of Sawan is exceptionally large. Current projections estimate that more than six lakh devotees will visit to offer prayers and seek blessings from Baba Vishwanath. Vishwabhushan Mishra, CEO of the temple trust, stated that over 10 lakh devotees are expected to visit and complete their darshan within a combined 48-hour window covering August 10 and August 11. Temple authorities and local administration continue to coordinate closely to manage the continuous surge of pilgrims, ensuring that all rituals are conducted safely and smoothly for every single visitor.
