Acharya Chanakya, remembered in Indian tradition by his other names Kautilya and Vishnugupta, wrote extensively about the practical side of daily life in his text known as Chanakya Niti. Among the many everyday mistakes he cautioned against are small household habits that quietly open the door to financial hardship. According to Chanakya, poverty and money troubles are rarely accidental, they usually stem from careless patterns inside the home itself. But he also laid out simple principles that, when followed, are said to invite Goddess Lakshmi into a household and keep economic problems at bay.
What Verse 21 Of Chapter Three Says
In the 21st verse of the third chapter of Chanakya Niti, three specific conditions are described as pleasing to Goddess Lakshmi. The verse states that she prefers to reside in a home where fools are not worshipped or flattered, where food is treated with respect and grains are properly stored, and where husband and wife share love without conflict between them.
Why Company Matters More Than People Realise
Explaining the verse, Chanakya said that people who show greater respect to wise, good individuals rather than to foolish ones never have to face a shortage of wealth. He observed that someone who spends most of their time in the company of fools eventually begins to think and behave the same way. On the other hand, a person who spends time around wise, respected people and treats them with honour ends up gaining valuable knowledge that benefits them later in life. In other words, the company a person keeps has a direct bearing on both their mindset and their financial fortunes.
Respecting Food And Storing Grain
The text further explains that households where food is respected continue to enjoy the blessings of the gods. According to Chanakya, every person should be grateful to have food at all, since a great many people in the world go without it. For this reason, food should never be wasted and must always be treated with respect. The verse also notes that people who keep their homes stocked with different kinds of grain go on to experience happiness and prosperity. Taking the availability of grain for granted, in Chanakya's view, is a mistake, since it is directly tied to the wellbeing of a household.
Lakshmi's Presence Depends On A Loving Marriage
Chanakya Niti states that Goddess Lakshmi always resides in a home where husband and wife share love and where no conflict exists between them. When a couple lives together with affection, the home is filled with a positive energy strong enough to dissolve every kind of flaw, since nothing is more powerful than love. In homes where quarrels and conflict are constant, by contrast, Goddess Lakshmi never settles, and the progress of the family comes to a halt. Chanakya adds that she is drawn only to homes where an atmosphere of peace persists, and where the people living there remain free of stress. This, he says, is why relationships should always be treated with respect and never taken lightly.
Why Lakshmi Is Called The Restless One
Among the many names attributed to Goddess Lakshmi is Chanchala, meaning restless, since it is not in her nature to remain fixed in one place. However, once she enters a household, she does not leave of her own accord. Because of this, Chanakya says a person who is content and free of greed does not even need to worship Goddess Lakshmi separately, since she arrives on her own and chooses to reside within that person's home and family.
