A priceless piece of Indian sporting legacy has been stolen in a high-profile burglary at the Bengaluru residence of former Indian hockey team captain and Olympian MM Somaya. Intruders broke into his home and decamped with valuable household articles along with rare international medals earned over a distinguished sporting career. The stolen memorabilia includes the historic gold medal Somaya won with the Indian men's hockey team at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. Somaya represented India across three Olympic Games and also served as captain of the national squad.
Break-in Targeted Locked House During Outstation Trip
The incident occurred at Somaya's home situated in the New Thippasandra locality within the Indiranagar jurisdiction in Bengaluru. The perpetrators took advantage of an unoccupied residence while Somaya and his family were away on a personal trip. The Olympian had traveled to his hometown in Kodagu between October 25 and October 28. During this period of absence, unidentified thieves broke the locks, ransacked the premises, and made away with expensive valuables along with the irreplaceable sporting honors preserved inside the house.
Theft Discovered Upon Return from Kodagu
Details mentioned in the First Information Report (FIR) registered with the Indiranagar police state that Somaya locked his residence and departed for Kodagu around 5:00 PM on October 25. He returned to Bengaluru three days later, arriving at approximately 7:15 AM on October 28. Upon entering the house, he found the locks breached and the premises thoroughly searched. Recognizing that his prized sporting honors had been taken, he immediately informed local authorities and formally lodged a police complaint.
Four Major International Medals Missing
The primary item among the stolen honors is the 1980 Moscow Olympics gold medal. In addition to the Olympic gold, the burglars stole three other celebrated international accolades Somaya secured during the 1980s. These include the silver medal won at the 1982 Asian Games held in New Delhi, the bronze medal secured at the 1986 Seoul Asian Games, and the bronze medal earned at the 1982 Champions Trophy in Amsterdam. The theft effectively wiped out physical tokens from four defining milestones of his international career.
Special Police Team Formed to Trace Culprits
Recognizing the national significance of the stolen sports memorabilia, senior police officials initiated an urgent probe. The Indiranagar police have assembled a dedicated special investigation team tasked with tracking the culprits, inspecting local clues, and recovering the stolen Olympic and international medals. The brazen burglary has caused widespread shock across the neighborhood and among Indian sports followers.
