The Indian men's hockey team scripted a historic milestone by defeating Malaysia 5-1 in the Asian Games final to claim the gold medal. This marks the fifth time the team has secured top honours at the continental event, and the first time in tournament history that India has successfully defended its men's hockey title. Beyond the gold medal, the victory ensured direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The triumph also took India's gold count to 21 in the ongoing edition, representing the country's second-best performance in the history of the competition. In another unprecedented achievement, both the men's and women's hockey squads secured gold medals simultaneously at the same games, with both units locking in direct Olympic berths.
Goal Scorers Lead Dominant Attacking Display
Captain Harmanpreet Singh led from the front during the final encounter, finding the back of the net twice to anchor the commanding scoreline. The rest of the forward line and penalty corner battery provided decisive support to dismantle Malaysia's defensive setup. Alongside Harmanpreet's brace, Jugraj Singh, Hardik Singh, and Shivanand Lakra contributed one goal each to seal the comprehensive 5-1 scoreline.
Intense Opening Quarter Ends Level
The title clash began with high intensity as both sides fought fiercely for early control. India drew first blood in the 11th minute when they earned a penalty corner, which Harmanpreet Singh clinically converted into the opening goal. That initial advantage proved short-lived, however, as Malaysia mounted a swift counterattack in the 14th minute to score an equaliser and close the first period tied at 1-1.
Jugraj Singh Delivers Crucial Second-Quarter Strike
The turning point arrived in the 22nd minute when India received another penalty corner opportunity while Harmanpreet Singh was off the pitch. Stepping up to the mark, specialist drag-flicker Jugraj Singh capitalised on the opening, firing home to restore the advantage to 2-1 seven minutes before halftime. From that juncture onwards, the Indian squad maintained tactical dominance, ultimately denying Malaysia any route back into the contest.
