Highlighting the day's performances, Soman Rana captured the gold medal in the men's F57 shot put final with a season-best effort, leading a top-two finish for the nation alongside teammate Shubham Juyal.
India Claims Top Two Positions in Men's F57 Shot Put
The men's F57 shot put event featured impressive throwing from the Indian contingent. Soman Rana, a silver medalist at the 2022 Asian Para Games, achieved his personal best for the current season by launching the shot put to a winning distance of 13.40 meters. Shubham Juyal joined him on the podium after registering his own season best of 13.28 meters to earn the silver medal. Cedric Ajamadji of Cameroon secured the bronze medal with a top effort measuring 12.57 meters.
Double Podium Finish in Men's Triple Jump
Earlier during the competition schedule, Indian jumpers made a significant mark in the men's triple jump final. Praveen Chithravel, who previously earned a bronze medal at the Asian Games, recorded a leap of 16.58 meters to take the silver medal. This mark represented an improvement over his previous performance in Glasgow. Joining him on the medal rostrum, Selva Prabhu Thirumaran cleared 16.52 meters to claim the bronze medal, marking his inaugural major international medal achievement. Jordan Scott of Jamaica won the gold medal in the competition with an impressive leap measuring 16.72 meters. Overall, Indian athletes accumulated five silver and five bronze medals across track and field events at these games.
Historic Milestone for Gulveer Singh and Track Performances
Distance runner Gulveer Singh etched his name into the record books on Saturday by securing the bronze medal in the men's 5000-meter race. With this achievement, he became the first Indian athlete to claim a medal in the 5000-meter event at the Commonwealth Games. Furthermore, he established a new milestone by becoming the first Indian athlete to secure two track and field medals within a single edition of the Commonwealth Games. In another track final, Ramesh Shanmugam competed in the men's T54 1500-meter event, crossing the finish line in three minutes and 23.59 seconds to conclude the competition in seventh place.
Mixed Results in Walking, Relay, and Vault Events
The women's 10,000-meter race walk event saw Priyanka Goswami record her season-best timing of 45 minutes and 53.93 seconds, placing fourth overall and narrowly missing out on a medal. The second Indian participant in the race walk, Raveena, faced disqualification during the competition.
In the mixed 4x400-meter relay final, the Indian quartet comprising Vishal TK, Ansa Babu, Santosh Kumar, and Rashdeep Kaur recorded a time of three minutes and 20.32 seconds. Their effort placed them sixth among the eight competing squads.
The men's pole vault competition also brought close finishes for the team. National record holder Dev Kumar Meena cleared a height of 5.30 meters to finish in fourth position, while fellow competitor Kuldeep Kumar achieved a height of 5.10 meters to complete the event in sixth place.
