India's campaign at the 500,000 dollar Korea Open Super 500 tournament in Yeosu, South Korea, has seen a major reshuffle on the eve of the competition. Star shuttler Lakshya Sen, who recently captured the Hylo Open crown in Germany, has opted to withdraw from the event. Sen was originally scheduled to clash against China's Dong Tian Yao in the opening round, but his absence now shifts the central responsibility of the men's singles charge onto the experienced shoulders of HS Prannoy.
HS Prannoy Faces Home Hopeful in Men's Singles
A bronze medallist at the 2023 World Championships, the 33-year-old Prannoy remains one of the most battle-tested competitors on the international badminton circuit. With Sen out of the draw, Prannoy will kick off his tournament against South Korea's You Tae Bin. Navigating the men's singles field will require peak form, as the competition also features top-seeded Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei, Japan's third seed Kodai Naraoka, and Canada's Victor Lai among the title contenders.
Tough Opening Tests for Women's Singles Contingent
The women's singles draw features several promising Indian names stepping into demanding first-round encounters. Rising talent Tanvi Sharma, who announced her arrival on the senior stage by clinching the Taipei Open title earlier this year, begins her run against Japan's Manami Suizu. Meanwhile, Malvika Bansod has drawn one of the toughest assignments of the opening round, facing tournament fourth seed Sim Yu Jin of South Korea.
Considerable attention will also be focused on 19-year-old Anmol Kharb, who is slated to meet Canada's Rachel Chan. Kharb is coming off an eye-catching semi-final run at last week's Hylo Open in Germany, where she advanced to the final four to face two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu. The Super 500 event in Yeosu provides another prime platform for the teenager to test her mettle against higher-ranked international opponents.
Challenging Doubles Clashes Await Indian Pairs
Indian representation extends into the doubles categories with demanding opening fixtures on the schedule. In women's doubles, the tandem of Sonali Singh and Ritika Thaker will square off against Australia's Laudya Chelsea Griselda and Nozomi Shimizu. In mixed doubles action, Dhruv Rawat and K Maneesha will lead the Indian contingent, opening their campaign against the formidable seventh-seeded Chinese duo of Zhu Yi Jun and Li Qian.
