Indian athletes are progressively carving out niches in non-traditional sports globally, pushing boundaries beyond conventional arenas. In a landmark achievement for Indian adventure sports, 21-year-old Adyut Doval, a resident of Noida, has created history by setting a new national record in freediving. Competing in an international freediving event held in the Philippines on August 2, Doval completed a total distance of 102 meters in the Free Immersion (FIM) discipline. With this feat, he became the youngest Indian athlete to participate at this level and establish a national record in depth freediving.
A Historic 102-Meter Dive in FIM Category
The Free Immersion category in freediving requires athletes to descend and ascend along a vertical rope using only their physical strength without scuba gear or artificial oxygen support. Doval successfully plunged to a depth of 51 meters and navigated back to the surface, covering a total distance of 102 meters in just 2 minutes and 40 seconds. Preparations for this challenging attempt began in July, when Doval relocated to the Philippines to train locally. The extended stay allowed him to acclimatize to atmospheric water pressure, oceanic currents, and sea conditions crucial for deep-sea diving.
Mindfulness and Yoga as Core Pillars
Doval has been actively practicing freediving for nearly three years. Descending to such depths subjects the human anatomy to immense water pressure, placing significant strain on the respiratory system. Addressing these physical demands, Doval highlighted that his training prioritized lung expansion and barotrauma prevention. He emphasized that freediving relies as much on mental resilience as it does on physical conditioning. Incorporating regular yoga into his routine proved instrumental in keeping his mind calm. According to Doval, a tranquil mental state directly translates to improved breath control under water. He considers freediving an extension of meditation that enhances focus across all life pursuits.
Family Heritage and Diverse Sports Achievements
Doval credits his family for providing steadfast support throughout his athletic journey. His father, Suresh Dutt Doval, is himself a professional freediver whose guidance shaped Adyut's passion for underwater sports. Alongside his athletic endeavors, Doval is currently pursuing a degree in law at OP Jindal University. He balances his academic commitments with a keen interest in several demanding disciplines, including mountaineering, boxing, MMA, biking, and scuba diving. Doval has previously earned accolades across state and national competitions. He noted that India's previous depth record in freediving hovered around 50 meters, making his 102-meter achievement a significant breakthrough for the country's aquatic sports community.
Upcoming Bengaluru Event and Future Breath-Hold Record
The landscape of freediving in India is undergoing a transformative shift. Doval revealed that Bengaluru is set to host India's first-ever pool freediving competition. While this event will take place in a pool environment rather than deep open water, it represents a monumental step forward for domestic freediving athletes. Looking ahead, Doval has set his sights on breaking another national benchmark. India's current out-of-water breath-holding (static apnea) record stands at approximately 5 minutes and 15 seconds. Doval, who can currently hold his breath for around 5 minutes, expressed confidence that with structured training and adequate opportunities, he will attempt to break this record as well.
