Rumesh's sporting background began on the cricket pitch rather than the athletics runway. As a teenager, he was a promising fast bowler who regularly clocked speeds around 130 km/h, eventually registering a top speed of 134 km/h in U-18 competitions. At the time, he trailed only Eshan Malinga in pace rankings, a bowler who later advanced to represent Sri Lanka's national team and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League.
His career trajectory altered significantly when athletics coach Tony Prasanna noticed his raw physical talent and persuaded him to switch to javelin throw. Rumesh credits coach Prasanna with guiding him through fundamental mechanics and instilling key discipline, viewing him as a mentor who teaches life lessons alongside sports skills.

While former Sri Lankan thrower Sumedha Ranasinghe had previously breached the 85-meter mark before experiencing a dip in performance, Rumesh Pathirage Tharanga has established himself through exceptional consistency. After finishing seventh at his debut World Championships in 2025, Rumesh elevated his performance further in subsequent events.
