Despite missing the Zurich Diamond League event, the Olympic medalist secured his passage to the season finale based on his strong standings from previous competitions. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Commonwealth Games champion Rumesh Pathirage dominated the javelin throw event in Zurich on Thursday, taking victory with an impressive throw of 92.07 meters.
Qualifying for Brussels Without Competing in Zurich
Neeraj Chopra chose to skip the Zurich Diamond League meet after previously missing three out of the five qualifying legs in the series. Nevertheless, the Indian athlete accumulated 12 qualification points from his appearances earlier in the season. These points proved sufficient to keep him inside the top 6 standings required to secure a place in the Brussels final. His efficient scoring across selective appearances allowed him to stay ahead of competing athletes in the qualification standings.
Rumesh Pathirage Dominates Zurich Diamond League
Sri Lanka star athlete and Commonwealth Games champion Rumesh Pathirage produced a commanding performance on Thursday to win the javelin throw event at the Zurich Diamond League. Pathirage recorded a winning mark of 92.07 meters, marking his second-best career throw. This performance came very close to his personal milestone achieved earlier in June at the Rome Diamond League, where he launched a career-high throw of 92.62 meters.
Neeraj Chopra's Performance Breakdown This Season
Prior to the Zurich leg, Neeraj Chopra competed at the Lausanne Diamond League, where he achieved a second-place finish with a best throw of 88.05 meters. He had initiated his 2024 Diamond League campaign at the Doha leg earlier in the season, delivering an 85.69-meter attempt that placed him fourth. The points earned from these two podium-contending performances were key to establishing his total score of 12 points.
Qualification Rules and Finalist Standings
The Diamond League qualification structure awards points to the top eight finishers in each javelin throw leg on a descending scale. The winner of an event receives 8 points, while the eighth-place finisher earns 1 point. At the conclusion of all qualification stages, the top 6 athletes with the highest accumulated point totals progress to the Diamond League Final.
Following the conclusion of the qualifying series, Rumesh Tharanga Pathiraj of Sri Lanka topped the standings with 39 points. Anderson Peters of Grenada finished second with 35 points, followed by Trinidad and Tobago's Keshav Walcott in third with 23 points. Curtis Thompson of the United States secured fourth position with 20 points, while India's Neeraj Chopra successfully locked in his spot among the top 6 contenders with 12 points.
