Promising long-distance runner Sushila Prajapat from Rajasthan has once again showcased her athletic prowess by securing a gold medal at the state level. Competing in the Rajasthan State Under-23 Athletics Championship, Sushila achieved top honors in the 10,000-meter race, crossing the finish line first to claim the gold medal. She followed up this performance by securing a silver medal in the 5,000-meter event. The 10,000-meter victory marks the 8th gold medal of her athletic career. Originating from a modest household with limited financial resources, her journey toward winning over a dozen career medals serves as an inspiring account of perseverance and dedication.
From Rural Tracks to State Podiums
Hailing from Heerawati village in the Didwana-Kuchaman district, Sushila Prajapat's athletic accomplishments are underpinned by years of relentless effort amidst difficult circumstances. Her father works as a daily wage laborer, and the family's economic situation was rarely easy. Despite financial hardships, Sushila remained committed to her athletic goals. What began as casual running alongside friends in her village gradually transformed into a serious passion. Driven by determination, she honed her running abilities, paving the way for her entry into competitive athletics.
Medal Achievements and Career Progression Since 2022
Sushila began her official competitive sports journey in 2022 at the Junior State Level competition held in Churu. During this maiden major tournament, she clinched the gold medal in the 3-kilometer event and added a bronze medal in the 1,500-meter race. Subsequently, she maintained her momentum across multiple cross-country races and Under-23 state meets. In 2023, she earned a silver medal at a state meet in Ajmer and a bronze medal in Bikaner. Later that year at the Under-23 championship in Jhunjhunu, Sushila delivered a stellar performance by winning gold medals in both the 10-kilometer and 5-kilometer long-distance races. To date, her competitive tally stands at 14 medals, comprising 8 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze medals.
Daily 15 to 18 km Training Routine
To sustain her performance as a top long-distance runner, Sushila adheres to a strict and rigorous daily training schedule. She runs between 15 and 18 kilometers every day during her practice sessions. In her view, natural talent alone is insufficient for success in long-distance running; continuous practice, unwavering discipline, and mental resilience are equally vital. Guided by this principle, she starts her training early each morning and ensures her workout routine remains uninterrupted even between official competitions.
Balancing BSF Duties and International Ambitions
Approximately six months ago, Sushila joined the Border Security Force (BSF). She currently balances her professional obligations in the force with her ongoing athletic development. While she has previously represented her state at national-level athletic competitions, she has yet to secure a medal on the national stage. Consequentially, her primary focus is to claim her first national-level medal and subsequently earn selection to represent India in international athletics events.
