Experienced Indian midfielder Nilakanta Sharma has decided to step down from international hockey following the conclusion of the ongoing Asian Champions Trophy. The 31-year-old Olympic medalist explained that his choice is driven by a desire to make room for the next generation of talented hockey players in the national squad. Speaking in Jalandhar, he noted that he informed chief coach Craig Fulton of his decision shortly after securing a medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games.
Stepping Aside for Emerging Youth
Hailing from Manipur, Nilakanta Sharma emphasized that there was no external pressure regarding his departure. He stated, "I made this decision myself so that talented players of the next generation can get their opportunity." While acknowledging that he will deeply miss representing the country on the turf, he reaffirmed that allowing younger players to step up is essential for the long-term success of the national side.
Strategic Transition Ahead of Los Angeles 2028
This movement aligns with Hockey India's broader restructuring plan designed for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. India previously secured direct qualification for the Olympics by winning the gold medal at the Asian Games. As part of this planned roster rotation, Nilakanta Sharma alongside fellow stalwarts Jarmanpreet Singh, Mandeep Singh, and Amit Rohidas are competing in their final international tournament during this Asian Champions Trophy. The national federation aims to integrate fresh talent into the squad early in the Olympic cycle.
Grassroots Coaching Aspirations in Manipur
Nilakanta has already laid out his post-retirement objectives. Following India's medal victory at the Tokyo Olympics, the Manipur state government offered him a position in its sports department. He purposefully selected the sports administration path to focus on nurturing young local athletes. Whenever he returns home, he actively coaches young players in his state and intends to dedicate his full energy to developing future hockey talent after stepping away from international competition.
Strong Start at the Asian Champions Trophy
The announcement comes amid a dominant start for the Indian team at the Asian Champions Trophy. India opened its campaign with an overwhelming 13-0 victory over Bangladesh, highlighted by a hat-trick from forward Mandeep Singh. The senior players remain focused on delivering a strong performance in their farewell tournament while facilitating a smooth transition for Indian hockey.
