When driven by passion and determination, age ceases to be a barrier to achieving greatness. Seventy-five-year-old Veerpal Singh, a resident of Ganganagar in Meerut, exemplifies this spirit every day. Demonstrating remarkable stamina and athletic prowess, he continues to compete in national and international running events, taking home top honors and proving to be an enduring source of inspiration for younger generations.
From a Wrestling Heritage to the Running Track
Originally hailing from the Jewar area of Noida, Veerpal Singh has made Meerut his home for many years. His family historically established a strong legacy in traditional wrestling, with multiple members gaining local fame in the sport. Naturally, Veerpal harbored a keen interest in wrestling during his early childhood. However, his athletic path transformed when he enrolled in the 7th grade. Recognizing his innate speed and endurance, his school physical training instructor (PTI) suggested that he shift his focus from wrestling to track running. Accepting his teacher's guidance, Veerpal committed himself to distance running, beginning a journey that would span decades of competition.
A Century of Gold Medals and a Legacy of Fitness
Throughout his long athletic career, Veerpal Singh has consistently aimed for top finishes. Competing across numerous national and international championships, he has accumulated over 100 gold medals, along with a substantial tally of silver and bronze honors. Participating in veteran categories for athletes aged 50 and above, he regularly secures first place. His dedication to sports has also deeply influenced his family, with both his son and daughter pursuing track running and earning recognition at the national level. At 75, Veerpal lives completely free from chronic conditions like high blood pressure or diabetes, noting that he cannot even remember the last time he suffered from a fever. His daily fitness regime includes running between 5 and 10 kilometers without exception.
Training the Next Generation in Ganganagar Park
Beyond his individual athletic pursuits, Veerpal Singh actively mentors the youth in his community. Every morning at a local park in Ganganagar, Meerut, he conducts physical conditioning sessions for young men and women aspiring to join public service. Thanks to his rigorous coaching, several local candidates have successfully cleared the stringent physical endurance examinations for the UP Police and the Indian Army. Strongly advocating for physical fitness, he encourages everyone to incorporate regular exercise into their daily routines to maintain long-term health and vitality.
