A relentless pursuit of academic goals despite economic insecurity can overcome the most daunting hurdles, as demonstrated by the inspiring trajectory of Dr Neeraj Kumar Singh. Rising from a humble farming hamlet in Varanasi to the lecture halls of higher learning, he currently serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of English at Jananayak Chandrashekhar University, Ballia. His path reflects how persistence through periods of unemployment, contractual jobs, and forgotten applications can culminate in noteworthy success.
Foundation in a Village Government School and Higher Studies
Dr Neeraj Kumar Singh belongs to Purashiv village in Varanasi district. He received his fundamental schooling within the boundaries of his native village, attending the local government school from class 1 through class 12 under the UP Board curriculum. Immersed in the rural socio-economic milieu, he developed an acute understanding of grassroots realities and limited institutional privileges.
Upon finishing his secondary education, he enrolled for his Bachelor of Arts degree at Banaras Hindu University. He continued his academic journey at the same historic institution to pursue a Master of Arts in English. Demonstrating academic competence, he secured the 24th rank in the university entrance test for the postgraduate programme.
Doctoral Research, Guest Lectureships, and Pandemic Setback
During the same academic year he finished his postgraduate studies, Dr Singh qualified for the Combined Research Entrance Test to begin his doctoral research. Under the supervision of multilingual scholar Dr Anuradha Banerjee, he completed his extensive PhD thesis focusing on the literary corpus of Vidiadhar Surajprasad Naipaul.
Obtaining a doctorate, however, did not instantly resolve the struggle for livelihood. Navigating joblessness, he secured an appointment as a guest faculty member at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, teaching there for roughly eight months. Subsequently, Chaudhary Mahadeo Prasad College in Allahabad announced openings for contractual faculty positions. Out of nine applicants competing for the post, Dr Singh emerged as the sole selected candidate. He taught at the Allahabad institution for approximately one and a half years, during which he also collaborated with the then department head to publish an academic book. This tenure came to an abrupt halt when the coronavirus pandemic forced institutions to shut down, terminating his contractual engagement and plunging his household into fresh livelihood anxieties.
The Unexpected 2020 Email and a Thirteen-Day Preparation Window
Refusing to surrender to circumstances, Dr Singh drew upon past efforts. Back in 2015, he had appeared for the written examination for the post of English lecturer in Government Inter Colleges, an attempt he had completely pushed out of memory over the intervening years. Five years later, in 2020, an unexpected email arrived from the Public Service Commission informing him that he had been shortlisted for the final interview.
The notification was both a welcome surprise and a formidable race against time, granting him a preparation window of merely 13 days. Married by that point and shouldering substantial domestic obligations, he organized an intensive study routine. His focused preparation bore remarkable fruit: he not only cleared the selection process but secured the third rank across the entire state of Uttar Pradesh. When newspapers covered the achievement, it marked his entry into permanent government service, bringing tears of relief and joy to him and his father.
From Bahraich Inter College to University Faculty
Following the state-level rank, Dr Singh joined Government Inter College in Bahraich as an English lecturer, where he rendered teaching services for one and a half years. Rather than halting his academic ambitions, he continued preparing for higher university positions during his posting.
He sat for the written test conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Higher Education Services Commission for professor appointments, scoring 25 marks out of 27 before clearing the viva voce. Simultaneously, he cleared the written assessment and interview process for Jananayak Chandrashekhar University, Ballia. Emerging successful on both fronts, he formally took charge as an Assistant Professor of English at the university in August 2022, completing an extraordinary transition powered by perseverance.
