In Fatehpur village of Bihar's Jamui district, Rekha Kumari has demonstrated how resolute determination can overcome severe domestic adversity to achieve educational goals. When she first aspired to pursue formal schooling, she faced hostile opposition from both her parents and her marital household. Over the years, she endured domestic violence, divorce, the death of her mother, and cruel social taunts that pushed her to the brink of suicide. Refusing to yield to circumstances, she completed her matriculation exams a full decade after her first attempt. Currently caring for her four-month-old infant, she has already embarked on higher secondary education.
Child Marriage, Severe Domestic Abuse, and Separation
Rekha was married off at an early age in accordance with rigid local customs. In 2016, she made her initial attempt to appear for the class 10 matriculation examinations. When she expressed her ambition to pursue basic education, her first husband subjected her to persistent verbal and physical violence. The marital conflict eventually culminated in him beating her and divorcing her, casting her out without financial or emotional stability.
Left entirely on her own, Rekha returned to her maternal home in Fatehpur village, watching her academic dreams slip away. Around the same period, she suffered another devastating personal loss when her mother passed away. Grieving her mother's death and dealing with the emotional aftermath of her broken marriage, she was unable to prepare for her studies, leading to failure in her 2016 matriculation attempt.
Facing Social Scorn and Starting Anew
Back in her native village, Rekha encountered relentless hostility from neighbors and community members who ridiculed her desire to study. The relentless social stigma and isolation severely impacted her mental wellbeing, to the point where she contemplated taking her own life. Despite the overwhelming despair, she gathered the resolve to keep moving forward.
Several years later, Rekha entered into a second marriage. Unlike her first experience, her second husband offered full encouragement for her academic ambitions. However, relatives from her maternal side and village locals continued to pass harsh remarks and create obstacles. To escape the daily domestic interference and maintain an environment conducive to learning, Rekha rented a modest room in the town of Jamui, located approximately 20 kilometers away from her village.
Community Support and Academic Success
During her stay in Jamui, Rekha received crucial assistance from an organization called Samagra Seva, which helped streamline her academic preparations. A dedicated educator named Ambika Kumari stepped forward to tutor her directly, guiding her curriculum coverage. Ambika Kumari observed that Rekha displayed exceptional courage, putting in long hours of study day and night to compensate for lost years.
Approximately ten years after her journey began, Rekha sat for the matriculation examinations once again. She successfully cleared the exams in the second division, securing an overall score of 286 marks. She is presently enrolled in intermediate studies. Rekha aspires to become a school teacher, aiming to educate girls from her rural locality so they do not face the educational deprivations and social hurdles she had to navigate.
