Shifting from Traditional Crops to Horticulture
The agricultural landscape in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri district is undergoing a significant transformation. Progressive farmers in the region are increasingly moving away from traditional cultivation methods toward horticulture, which is proving to be highly profitable. Amit Verma, a local farmer, has successfully set up an Amrapali mango orchard spanning five acres, substantially multiplying his seasonal income. Today, his flourishing orchard serves as a model of modern horticultural practices and inspires other farmers in the region.
Fulfilling a Father's Vision
In a conversation with TrendKia, Amit Verma shared the deeply personal story behind this orchard. He revealed that establishing an Amrapali mango plantation on their five-acre land was his father's dream. His father had planted the saplings and initiated the project several years ago. Following his father's demise in 2024, Amit took full charge of the orchard, dedicatedly managing the irrigation, plant protection, and overall maintenance of the trees, which are now bearing high-quality fruits every year.
The Unique Appeal of Amrapali Mangoes
Lakhimpur Kheri's fertile soil and favorable climate offer the perfect conditions for growing high-yield mangoes. The Amrapali variety cultivated in Amit's orchard stands out in the market due to several key features:
- The mangoes mature and become ready for harvest specifically in the month of August.
- They possess a rich, sweet taste, a distinct aroma, and an attractive golden-green color.
- The pulp is deep orange and has extremely low fiber content compared to other varieties.
- This specific variety contains a much higher concentration of Vitamin A than conventional mangoes.
Because of these qualities, Amrapali mangoes are highly sought after by consumers and traders alike. Buyers and merchants from local markets as well as neighboring districts travel directly to Amit's orchard to purchase the harvest, ensuring a highly lucrative direct-to-market business model.
