Agricultural practices are undergoing a significant shift across the villages of Itiyathok block in the Gonda district of Uttar Pradesh. Local farmers are increasingly moving away from traditional food grain crops in favor of high-yield cash crops and commercial vegetable farming. Leading this transformation is Shatrughan, a progressive farmer from the region who has cultivated ridge gourd on approximately one bigha of land. Through systematic care, timely field management, and modern techniques, his field is currently witnessing a bountiful harvest. This profitable vegetable farming venture has enabled Shatrughan to comfortably support his family while establishing a respectable source of rural employment.
The Trellis Method and Crop Maintenance
To maximize output and harvest superior quality produce, Shatrughan opted for the trellis or machan method instead of conventional ground-based cultivation. Under this system, a sturdy supporting framework made of bamboo poles and wires is erected across the plot. As the ridge gourd vines grow, they are carefully guided to climb onto the structure. Raising the vines off the ground ensures that the foliage and developing fruits receive ample sunlight and airflow, preventing rot and soil-borne diseases. Furthermore, fruits growing on a trellis develop a uniform shape, vibrant color, and clean texture, which command premium prices in the local wholesale market.
Shatrughan dedicates meticulous effort to managing his crop from seed germination through to harvesting. His daily routine involves systematic monitoring of the plot, timely irrigation schedules, regular weeding, and balanced fertilizer applications. He closely inspects the plants to detect any early signs of pest infestation or disease. Returning to the Village to Build a Future
Shatrughan's journey toward agricultural success was shaped by hardship. Due to adverse financial conditions at home during his youth, he was unable to pursue formal education. To meet his family's pressing monetary needs, he initially migrated to a distant city for employment. However, while working away from home, he realized that laboring in an unfamiliar city was less fulfilling than cultivating his own land back home. Owing to personal circumstances, he returned to his native village and made a firm decision to turn his ancestral farm into a full-time self-employment enterprise.
Economics of Investment and Revenue
Explaining the financial breakdown of ridge gourd farming, Shatrughan notes that cultivating one bigha of land requires an overall expenditure ranging between 15,000 and 20,000 rupees. This capital outlay covers high-quality seeds, land preparation, fertilizers, irrigation electricity, and the initial setup cost for the wooden trellis structure. Under basic conditions, initial field preparation can also begin with an initial investment of around 10,000 rupees.
Shatrughan emphasizes that when weather conditions remain favorable, crops remain disease-free, and market prices hold strong, a single bigha can generate profits running into lakhs of rupees. Unlike seasonal field crops, commercial vegetable farming provides continuous harvesting over several weeks, ensuring a steady cash flow for the household throughout the harvest cycle.
Advocating Vegetable Cultivation for Smallholders
Based on his personal experience, Shatrughan strongly advises fellow farmers to diversify their agricultural practices. Rather than relying solely on traditional staple crops such as wheat or paddy, small landholders should allocate portions of their farmland to high-value vegetables. He underscores that even small plots can yield substantial financial returns if farmers adhere to proper management schedules for irrigation, weeding, fertilization, and vertical trellis support. Today, ridge gourd farming serves as the primary backbone of sustenance and prosperity for Shatrughan's entire family.
