After receiving strong directives from the Indian government and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Meta has taken decisive action against prohibited content on its platforms. The government had expressed severe concerns regarding advertisements and content on Instagram that allegedly promoted child sexual abuse, leading to a major confrontation. Meta has formally stated that child sexual exploitation is a heinous crime and that it is committed to implementing strict measures against any such material across its platforms. As a direct result of these efforts, the company has removed 1.6 lakh suspicious accounts in India over the past six months.
Notice from the Ministry and its Impact
The situation escalated last week when the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a notice to Meta, demanding the immediate removal of all advertisements and content related to child sexual abuse on Instagram. The government set a seven-day deadline for the company to respond. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw directed officials to summon Meta representatives to address the gravity of the situation. This government-led pressure has yielded results, with Meta now detailing the technical and operational steps it is taking to curb online crimes and ensure child safety.
AI-Driven Monitoring of Content
Meta explained that it is leveraging sophisticated Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify potentially harmful content. This technology is utilized to detect suspicious links, activities related to child exploitation, and irregular user behavior. According to Meta, this AI-based approach allowed the company to remove over 4 million suspicious accounts globally across Facebook and Instagram during the previous year.
Verification of Advertisements
Beyond individual accounts, Meta emphasizes that it conducts thorough screenings of advertisements to ensure that illicit networks and inappropriate content do not receive visibility. The company claimed that its automated systems had already identified and terminated several violating ads and linked accounts even before government agencies formally raised the issue. Regarding allegations that Meta intentionally targets child-related advertisements toward individuals with inappropriate interests, the company has categorically denied these claims, stating that it never engages in such practices under any circumstances.
