Losing a smartphone in transit or having it stolen in crowded public spaces can create immense anxiety for any individual. Modern mobile devices store not only personal contacts and memories, but also critical credentials linked directly to financial accounts. To tackle this widespread problem, the Government of India rolled out the Sanchar Saathi portal, which has rapidly transformed into a dependable support system for citizens facing device theft or misplacement. Since its formal rollout in May 2023, the citizen-centric digital platform has recorded over 300 million visits. Official figures indicate that the system has successfully helped recover and return over 1.4 million lost and stolen handsets to their rightful owners.
Instant IMEI Blocking And Real-Time Network Tracking
Whenever a mobile phone goes missing or is stolen, the immediate recommended step following a police complaint is to access the dedicated web portal at sancharsaathi.gov.in. Once a user submits the unique IMEI number of the missing device, the platform immediately blocks the handset across all operational telecom networks throughout the country. Once blacklisted, the device becomes completely unusable, preventing any unauthorized user or thief from accessing telecom services even if a fresh SIM card is inserted. The moment any activity is attempted on that blocked hardware, the centralized monitoring system detects the signal and immediately tracks its presence for law enforcement intervention.
Key Milestones In Blocking, Tracing And Device Recovery
The operational scale of this digital mechanism shows that 6.096 million missing or stolen devices have been blocked across the nation. Leveraging coordinated technical infrastructure, 3.785 million mobile phones were successfully traced. Following these tracking leads, collaborative field operations between telecom network operators and state police departments led to the physical recovery of over 1.4 million handsets, which were subsequently handed back to their owners. Furthermore, every complaint lodged on the portal generates vital intelligence for the Department of Telecommunications, financial banking institutions, and law enforcement agencies. This real-time reporting reinforces the Financial Fraud Risk Indicator (FRI) framework, which monitors and evaluates mobile numbers potentially tied to financial crime.
The Chakshu Facility Tackles Cyber Scams And Fraudulent Numbers
Beyond tracing misplaced hardware, the digital infrastructure operates as a strong defense against expanding online scams. Through the integrated 'Chakshu' facility, citizens can actively report suspicious incoming voice calls, SMS alerts, and WhatsApp messages related to counterfeit KYC updates, fake lottery jackpots, deceptive loan approvals, fraudulent work-from-home employment schemes, or impostors pretending to be police and government officials. Citizens can also audit all active mobile numbers registered under their identity and verify a handset's authenticity prior to purchase. To date, the Chakshu portal has received 1.28 million complaints concerning suspected fraud. Action has been taken in approximately 5.982 million cases following these alerts, resulting in the permanent disconnection of over 5 million mobile connections.
