British players enjoyed a successful day on the third matchday of the Lexus Wrexham Open at the Wrexham Tennis and Padel Centre. Alicia Dudeney led the charge with a grueling victory, while teenagers and compatriots also advanced to ensure a strong home representation in the latter stages of the World Tennis Tour W100 event.
Alicia Dudeney Survives Marathon Clash
In-form Alicia Dudeney extended her impressive winning run to seven matches following an epic encounter against seventh seed Susan Bandecchi from Switzerland. The grueling battle lasted two hours and 51 minutes before Dudeney finally overcame her opponent with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 6-4. Following this exhausting triumph, she will now advance to the last eight where she is scheduled to face French competitor Elsa Jacquemot.
Hannah Klugman and Jodie Burrage Impress
Dudeney was soon followed into the Carden Park Arena by Hannah Klugman, with the 17-year-old delivering another mature performance. Klugman secured a straightforward victory by defeating higher-ranked Czech player Anna Siskova 6-2, 6-4. Having reached the French Open junior girls final last year and currently holding a world ranking of 341, Klugman will next face sixth seed Rebecca Sramkova from Slovakia.
Meanwhile, Jodie Burrage ensured that three British players would feature in Friday's lineup by overcoming fourth seed Noma Noha Akugue 6-1, 7-6 (11-9) in a competitive clash. Burrage will face fifth seed Marina Bassols Ribera in the next round after the Spanish star earned her progression by defeating Australian player Lizette Cabrera.
Major Upsets and Tournament Schedule
Elsewhere in the tournament, a significant upset occurred when top seed Anna Blinkova was eliminated in the second round. The French player, currently ranked 72nd in the world, suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat against Suzan Lamens from the Netherlands. The strong performances by the British contingent have provided a welcome boost for home fans, particularly after reigning champion Mimi Xu from Swansea chose to skip her title defense in favor of competing at the W75 Saguenay tournament in Canada.
The tournament schedule progresses with the singles quarter-finals and doubles semi-finals taking place on Friday, 23 October. This will be followed by the singles semi-finals on Saturday, 24 October, culminating in the singles and doubles finals on Sunday, 25 October.
