Four British tennis competitors stand just one win away from securing their spots in the main draw of the US Open after navigating through challenging second-round qualifying encounters in New York. Jacob Fearnley, Toby Samuel, Harry Wendelken, and Harriet Dart each produced resilient performances to progress into the decisive third qualifying round.
Resilient Fightbacks in the Men's Qualifying Singles
In the men's qualifying singles draw, 25-year-old Jacob Fearnley demonstrated exceptional composure to remain on course. Fearnley, currently ranked world number 100 who broke into the top 50 last summer despite battling physical injuries, fought through a demanding three-set battle against Luka Pavlovic of France. After falling behind by a break of serve in the opening set, Fearnley recovered to take the lead. Toby Samuel also staged an impressive comeback as he aims to reach the US Open main draw for the very first time in his career. The 23-year-old player, who made his Grand Slam main draw debut at this year's French Open, overcame an initial set deficit against fellow Briton Billy Harris. Samuel dominated the remainder of the contest to seal a 4-6 6-4 6-1 win, booking a meeting against Chile's former top-20 star Cristian Garin.
Meanwhile, 24-year-old Harry Wendelken delivered one of the most dramatic victories of the day. Ranked 196th and seeking his first main draw appearance at an overseas Grand Slam, Wendelken saved a match point in a grueling three-hour battle against Switzerland's Remy Bertola. Finding himself down a set and 5-2 in the second set, Wendelken stood on the precipice of elimination. He denied Bertola on match point to level the second set at 5-5 before pulling through the tie-break. In the deciding set, Wendelken built a 5-2 advantage and held off a late surge from his opponent to finish with a 5-7 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win. He now moves on to play Lithuania's Vilius Gaubas.
However, Jack Pinnington Jones experienced a reversal of fortune. Despite claiming the opening set, he ultimately suffered a 2-6 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 defeat at the hands of Finland's Otto Virtanen.
Dart Leads British Women while Allies Prepare for Wednesday Action
In the women's qualifying section, 30-year-old Harriet Dart rallied to keep her main draw aspirations alive. The world number 77 dropped the opening set against 16-year-old American opponent Kristina Penickova before asserting firm authority over the final two sets to advance 5-7 6-0 6-3. Dart could potentially face fellow Briton Heather Watson or Spain's Angela Fita Boluda in her next match.
Looking ahead, additional British players are set for action on Wednesday. Fran Jones takes on Germany's Mona Barthel, while Katie Swan plays against American competitor Mary Stoiana, with both aiming to reach the third and final qualifying round.

Elsewhere in the qualifying draw, former tournament semi-finalist Grigor Dimitrov kept his bid for a 15th US Open main draw appearance alive. The 35-year-old Bulgarian achieved a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 victory against Kazakhstan's Timofey Skatov, setting up a showdown with Otto Virtanen.
China's two-time US Open quarter-finalist Zheng Qinwen, playing in a Grand Slam qualifying event for the first time since the 2022 Australian Open, produced a solid 6-1 7-5 win over France's Clara Burel. She advances to face Russian player Elena Pridankina.
Additionally, 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu comfortably cleared her second-round obstacle. The 26-year-old Canadian swept past Ukraine's Veronika Podrez 6-0 6-3. To secure her first US Open main draw spot in two years, Andreescu must overcome Slovenia's Tamara Zidansek, a former 2021 French Open semi-finalist.
