British tennis player Sonay Kartal marked her return to the WTA Tour in style, securing a decisive first-round victory at the China Open after nearly six months away from competitive tennis due to injury. Competing in Beijing, the world number 129 produced a dominant display to brush aside Spain's Andrea Lazaro Garcia 6-2 6-3. The victory represents a major milestone in Kartal's comeback, proving her physical readiness after a prolonged spell on the sidelines.
Commanding Performance on the Beijing Hard Courts
Facing Spanish qualifier Andrea Lazaro Garcia, Kartal established control right from the opening exchanges. The Briton landed 69% of her first serves throughout the contest, providing a solid platform to protect her service games while consistently putting pressure on her opponent. Lazaro Garcia struggled for rhythm and handed Kartal opportunities with four double faults. Capitalising ruthlessly on break points, Kartal broke the qualifier's serve five times to comfortably wrap up the match in straight sets.
Overcoming Injury and Rebuilding Rankings
Kartal's 2026 campaign was abruptly interrupted in March during Indian Wells, where she had defeated two seeded competitors before suffering a debilitating back injury. That physical setback kept her away from tournament play for nearly half a year, during which her ranking slipped down to 129. Upon stepping back onto the tour last week, she fought hard before narrowly losing to Czech world number 26 Marie Bouzkova. Carrying the positives from that tight battle into Beijing, Kartal showed sharper execution against Lazaro Garcia. As she aims to climb back up the international standings, a stiffer test awaits in the next round, where she will face Chinese 31st seed Wang Xinyu.
Mixed Fortunes for British Players Across Asia
Kartal's progress is part of a busy week for British tennis stars competing across Asian tournaments. Fellow compatriots Harriet Dart and Cameron Norrie were both scheduled to take the court later on Thursday. However, results elsewhere proved difficult for British representation. At the Japan Open, British number one Arthur Fery suffered an opening-round exit, losing a tightly contested battle 6-4 3-6 6-4 against Portuguese lucky loser Jaime Faria.
Holger Rune Falters in ATP Tour Return
The action in Tokyo also featured the much-anticipated return of Denmark's Holger Rune, who was making his first appearance on the ATP Tour in nearly twelve months. The former world number four had seen his career put on hold after tearing his Achilles tendon in October 2025, an absence that eventually saw him drop out of the world's top 100. Rustiness was evident in his first outing, as France's Kyrian Jacquet comfortably controlled the contest to eliminate the Dane 6-3 6-1.
