Indian women's tennis witnessed a historic milestone as Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale punched their tickets to the doubles final at the Chennai Open. The home pair delivered a stellar performance in a thrilling semifinal clash, overcoming the second-seeded duo of Poland's Veronica Falkowska and America's Alana Smith with a hard-fought 6-2 2-6 10-8 victory. By securing this win, the duo became the very first all-Indian pair to reach the championship round of a WTA Tour-level tournament.
A Groundbreaking Achievement for Indian Tennis
This breakthrough marks a watershed moment for women's tennis in the country, given that no pairing consisting entirely of Indian nationals had previously advanced to a main WTA Tour-level final. Looking back at past records, Shikha Uberoi and her sister Neha reached the finals of the Sunfeast Open and Guangzhou Open in 2005, but Neha represented the United States, making it a cross-border partnership. Meanwhile, legendary player Sania Mirza captured 43 doubles titles during her illustrious career, yet she never partnered with another Indian player for those tournament victories.
Previous Milestones and Dominant Start in the Match
At the tier just below the main tour, Ankita Raina and Karman Thandi triumphed in a WTA 125 doubles event back in 2018. In addition, Prarthana Thombare reached three WTA 125 finals alongside Dutch partner Arianne Hartono. In their latest encounter, Adkar and Bhosale asserted early dominance, capitalizing on their opponents' mistakes to jump to a commanding 4-1 lead in the opening set. The turning point of the early stages came in the third game when the Indian duo claimed an early breakthrough after Adkar unleashed a powerful return off Smith's second serve that Falkowska failed to control, allowing them to comfortably close out the first set.
Second Set Turbulence and Super Tie-Break Resilience
The momentum shifted dramatically in the second set as the foreign pair regrouped. The Indian duo squandered crucial opportunities to break serve in the third and fifth games, enabling their opponents to level the match and force a tense super tie-break. Under immense pressure, Falkowska and Smith raced to a 3-0 lead, and later the Indian pair found themselves trailing at 6-8. Demonstrating incredible composure when it mattered most, Adkar and Bhosale rattled off four consecutive points to seal the victory and secure their spot in the final.
