Disposable plastic plates, cups, and spoons are a common sight today, used everywhere from upscale restaurants to roadside food stalls. However, the use of plastics and associated chemicals in these utensils has continuously raised significant health concerns. Serving hot meals and beverages in plastic containers notably increases the risk of microplastic ingestion into the human body. Consequently, the search for safer alternatives to plastic disposables has accelerated. Addressing this critical need, a first-year PhD student at IIT Delhi has spent about six months developing an eco-friendly substitute that closely mimics the appearance of traditional plastic disposables while being crafted from environmentally responsible materials.
The Result of Six Months of Dedicated Effort
The innovation, which has the potential to completely replace conventional plastic tableware, was developed following rigorous hard work over a six-month period. Visually, the product looks identical to attractive plastic disposables currently found in the market. In reality, however, it completely avoids the use of plastics, relying instead on sustainable manufacturing methods to protect both nature and consumers.
Ensuring Safety for Both Nature and Humans
The biodegradable and bio-based glassware was created under the guidance of Professor Hari Prasad at IIT Delhi by the first-year doctoral student Subhashree. In a detailed discussion, she explained that for the past six months, her primary goal was to invent something that causes zero harm to the environment, decomposes effortlessly, and leaves no adverse health impacts on the human body. This led to the creation of an eco-friendly cup designed to safely hold hot foods and beverages without posing cancer risks associated with standard plasticware. Alongside this, she has engineered two additional products classified as thermo-functional food materials, which help maintain the temperature of stored items for extended periods, preventing rapid cooling or warming. She has also designed an ice pack that is anticipated to win wide consumer approval in the near future.
Affordable Pricing and Interest from Major Corporations
Subhashree noted that the price of a single eco-friendly glass has been kept at just one and a half rupees, making it easily accessible for everyone. She expressed confidence that these sustainable items will successfully replace hazardous conventional disposables in the market that carry potential cancer risks. Major corporations have already initiated continuous contact with her regarding the products, expressing a keen desire to acquire them. Currently, approval has already been granted for one of her products, while regulatory paperwork for the other two items is underway, with expectations of soon securing backing from a major company.
