Japan is about to redefine what luxury rail travel can look like. From October 1, 2026, the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen will introduce a brand-new travel tier called Supreme Class, sitting above the existing Green Car option and delivering a premium, private experience that JR West says was designed around the needs of business travelers, families, and anyone seeking a more personal journey.
Two Types of Private Cabin From Day One
At the heart of Supreme Class are two fully enclosed private cabins, located in coach 7 and coach 10 respectively. Coach 7 features a larger cabin designed for two passengers, fitted with sofa-style seating. Coach 10 offers a solo cabin built for a single traveler. In both cases, the seats are fixed in position and cannot be rotated. A third option is also coming: a semi-private premium seat, set to be added to the lineup from 2027.
A Full Lineup of Premium Amenities
The amenities packed into Supreme Class read more like a boutique hotel checklist than a standard train booking. Passengers can expect:
- A private door secured by an electronic lock
- A premium reclining seat with a leg rest
- Individual lighting and air conditioning controls
- High-speed Wi-Fi
- Tablet-based service ordering
- Complimentary food and beverages
- A Bluetooth speaker
- A large work table
- Overhead storage space for airline-style carry-on bags
World-First 5G Technology Meets Traditional Japanese Artistry
Supreme Class is not just about physical comfort. Every cabin will be fitted with what is described as the world's first railway-grade 5G glass antenna technology, ensuring fast and stable connectivity throughout the journey. On the aesthetic side, cabin interiors will be decorated with traditional Japanese handicrafts, weaving cultural artistry into the very modern luxury setting and giving passengers a taste of Japan's heritage alongside the high-end amenities.
How to Book and When the First Train Departs
The inaugural Supreme Class journey will depart from Tokyo at 6:00 AM on October 1, 2026, aboard the Nozomi Number 1 train. Passengers eager to secure a place can begin booking from September 15, 2026, through two platforms: Express Reservation and Smart EX.
Which Trains and Routes Will Carry Supreme Class
The rollout begins on N700S series 16-coach bullet trains running the Tokyo to Hakata route, with services being introduced in stages. Once the plan is fully under way from October 2026, approximately 12 Supreme Class services are expected to run every day, counting both directions of travel combined on that route.
