Visitors traveling to the scenic hill station of Nainital in Uttarakhand will soon have the opportunity to explore much more than its famous lakes and mountain peaks. The Nainital District Tourism Department has rolled out a new initiative to broaden the scope of eco-tourism in the region while creating fresh employment avenues for local residents. Under this scheme, registered tourist guides operating in Nainital will receive free professional training in bird watching, enabling them to lead specialized birding tours for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.
Expanding Eco-Tourism Horizons in Nainital
Nainital has long been celebrated for its majestic natural landscapes, but most tourists traditionally limit their visits to boating in Naini Lake and exploring city viewpoints. However, the dense forests surrounding Nainital are home to an extraordinary variety of avian species. By equipping local guides with technical knowledge about bird habitats, behavior, and species identification, the tourism department aims to unlock a whole new dimension of eco-tourism. Tourists will now be able to go on guided nature walks and immerse themselves in the region's rich biodiversity.
Pangot and Kilbury: Home to Over 350 Bird Species
Situated roughly 15 kilometers from Nainital town, the village of Pangot is widely recognized among bird lovers for its tranquil environment and lush forest cover. Along with nearby areas like Kilbury, Pangot attracts nature enthusiasts from across the globe. District Tourism Officer Kirti Chandra Arya noted that the Pangot region alone shelters more than 350 distinct species of birds. The temperate climate and pristine canopy offer an ideal habitat for numerous resident and migratory birds, making it a natural hub for specialized bird watching excursions.
10-Day Free Training, Accommodation, and Licensing
Outlining the execution plan, District Tourism Officer Kirti Chandra Arya shared that the initial phase will train a batch of approximately 25 to 30 local tourist guides. Preference will be given to guides who are already registered with the local municipal board. The comprehensive training program will span 10 days, during which participants will be taught how to identify various bird species, understand their nesting and feeding habits, and manage birding itineraries efficiently. To ensure full participation, the tourism department will provide free lodging and meals throughout the course. Upon successful completion, candidates will be awarded official licenses certifying them as qualified bird watching guides.
Boosting Local Economy and Self-Employment Opportunities
This initiative is designed to deliver dual benefits: elevating the travel experience for visitors while bolstering the local economy. With official credentials, guides will be able to expand their service portfolio and command better earning opportunities. Furthermore, an increase in bird watching enthusiasts will indirectly benefit the wider local ecosystem, including homestay owners, hoteliers, taxi operators, and local vendors in and around Nainital.
Official Directives and Upcoming Application Process
Nainital District Magistrate Lalit Mohan Rayal has instructed the tourism department to expedite the rollout of this project. The administration emphasizes that structured eco-tourism initiatives are key to unlocking self-employment for local youth. The tourism department will officially publish detailed guidelines and notification notices in newspapers and through public channels shortly, allowing eligible local guides to register and participate in the upcoming training batch.
