Construction work is progressing at a rapid pace on a major expressway stretching from Chhattisgarh capital Raipur through Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, all the way to Dhanbad. Spanning a total length of 707 kilometers, this extensive roadway is currently being built with four lanes, with provisions to expand it to six or eight lanes in the future as traffic demands grow. Once completed, this expressway will greatly ease travel and transportation between Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. Travelers along this route will also experience scenic views, as the pathway will pass through lush green mountains, dense forests, and numerous waterfalls, significantly enhancing the thrill of the journey.
Halving Travel Time and Reducing Distance
Upon completion of the Raipur-Dhanbad expressway, the travel time between these destinations will be cut in half. Currently, driving from Raipur to Dhanbad takes more than 16 hours through the existing road network. The current road distance between the two states is approximately 772 kilometers, but once the new expressway opens, that distance will shrink to just 707 kilometers. Furthermore, travel time will drop drastically because vehicles on the expressway will be permitted to travel at speeds of up to 120 kilometers per hour, allowing motorists to complete the entire journey in a mere 8 hours.
Boosting Industrial Corridors and Mining Sectors
This upcoming expressway will serve as much more than just a connectivity route; it will provide substantial economic benefits to the regional industrial corridor. Both Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand rank foremost in terms of mineral wealth in the country. Consequently, the expressway will offer direct and secure transportation access for the coal industry, mining operations, and various industrial zones. The roadway will pass through key industrial hubs including Raipur, Bilaspur, Korba, Jashpur, Ranchi, Bokaro, and Dhanbad, which are recognized as major industrial centers in both states, ensuring that industries reap the maximum rewards.
Combining Greenfield and Brownfield Development
The construction of this expressway incorporates both greenfield and brownfield approaches. The section between Raipur and Bilaspur is being developed as a six-lane brownfield project, while the rest of the entire expressway is being constructed entirely as a greenfield project. This means that aside from the Raipur-Bilaspur stretch, the remaining portion of the expressway is being built completely from scratch. This distinction explains why only the Raipur-Bilaspur segment is designed with six lanes, while the rest of the expressway will feature four lanes.
NHAI Packages and Segment Breakdown
The National Highways Authority of India has divided the construction of this expressway into seven distinct packages. The longest section spans 140 kilometers, stretching between Gumla and Ranchi. In contrast, the shortest section covers 68 kilometers and is being constructed between Bokaro and Dhanbad. Additionally, the 125-kilometer stretch between Raipur and Bilaspur is being developed under a brownfield framework. The third longest segment runs between Urga and Pathalgaon, measuring 120 kilometers in length.
Project Cost, Targets, and Infrastructure Features
NHAI has estimated an initial expenditure of approximately 18,000 crore rupees to build this expressway. The largest single allocation within this budget, amounting to 3,500 crore rupees, will be spent on the Raipur-Bilaspur stretch. The entire project is targeted for completion by January 2028. To ensure safety and smooth transit, the route will feature 7 major bridges and 30 minor bridges. Additionally, 6 flyovers and 1 elevated road will be constructed. Given that parts of the road pass through forested terrain, 10 vehicular underpasses along with 44 additional underpasses are planned.
Current Progress and Timeline
According to NHAI updates, the Detailed Project Report for the 125-kilometer road between Raipur and Bilaspur has already been issued. Meanwhile, approximately 94 percent of the work on the 707-kilometer greenfield lane between Bilaspur and Urga has been successfully completed. Paving work is actively underway on the 87-kilometer stretch between Urga and Pathalgaon, while construction on the 104-kilometer road between Pathalgaon and Kunkuri commenced as early as April. Land acquisition is currently underway for the 137-kilometer road section between Pathalgaon and Gumla. With these milestones in motion, the overarching project aims for completion within the next year and a half.
